Old postings

I've been looking for a thread / topic that I started (or maybe contributed to) a few years ago, but can't find any of my postings earlier than Jan 2009.

Is there a time limit on topics, are they archived somewhere, are they retreivable ?

I've clicked on archive, it then opens a 'list' of the forum.
Click on 'general chat', for instance, that then allows access to over 8000 posts dating back to 2005 ish.
But how do I search through those 8000 posts ? Surely not individually ?
