Offline mapping

I have read odd snippets referring to offline maps and there use. I have an ipad and am thinking that some sort of offline mapping with POI s seems to be a grand idea. Any input on preferences and why would be appreciated

derath............have you tried mapfactor the free navigation app with its downloadable maps and numerous local amenities..........if you are looking to find your way around with local detail, this is it..............pughed2

Osmand is available for iPad.

I haven't got an iDevice, so I've never tried it. The Android version is absolutely brilliant. I believe the iOS version lags a bit behind interms of features, offline route planning etc. Not sure whether the iOS version handle POI import. The Android version certainly does.

I have osmand+ and maps.me on my android phone,I can recommend both apps and I believe they are both available for apple devices. Both of these work very well on the android OS,as has already been mentioned no data connection is required so no data roaming charges when in Europe. You will need a fair bit of phone storage space on the device as the map files are quite large.I am using a phone with a 32Gb internal memory with a similar size sdcard.I also have the copilot satnav app which again stores the maps off line.
I did have a problem getting some of the map files onto the sd card after the android kitkat update but since the last update to android 5.1 all the offline maps have downloaded to the ext sd card successfully.

You not considered a dedicated satnav? the prices are good these days and would save using your ipad, which might be a bit too big for this use?
Ive always used tomtom's but i believe theres a truck one that some members use from ebay thats fairly good.

I do have a dedicated sat nav, I am looking at having an option of full mapping with a search/view option to plan moves from site to site etc, certain like the look of map.me and OsmAnd maps and will be investigating them further

Microsoft Autoroutes is the best route planner I have used,I have it loaded on a 10''Samsung netbook running win7 and it's still going strong even though microsoft withdrew support for the programme back in April.I don't think there is an equivalent available, used in conjunction with a gps dongle it is brilliant for finding all the different poi data sets I have loaded.I find the nearby poi I want to go to,show the coordinates and then input them into copilot on the smartphone.Autoroutes can be used as a satnav if required but I prefer copilot.
As long as the programme keeps going I wil carry on using it,if anyone knows of a similar programme to Autoroutes please post it on here.

Tyre

For route planning have a look at a program called tyre, it can export routes when there made into different formats for different satnavv programes

It just goes to show how opinions differ. On another forum someone recommended the exact opposite advice to you. He said that for very little money you could have a better system by using the apps etc recommended on this thread.

I recently bought a Garmin Camper 760 (quite expensive) and I am a bit disappointed. I prefer my old Tom Tom One to be honest. The ability to program in the size of vehicle seems to be of limited help for motorhomers, although I have proved it to work in one instance. It has also taken me to a destination the long way round on an A road, when the shorter route was also an A road.

I would like to get rid of the pre programmed POI's on the screen but show Custom POI's (like the WC POI's) but it cannot be done.

I wish now that I had just bought one of the cheap Truck satnavs off ebay. :(
