Obtaining a second key

I went in Timpsons and they quoted slightly less than a main dealer for a car key with chip programmed, but they didn't sound that confident either, that they could do it. So I bit the bullet and paid £225 from dealership for a proper job.
Key cuttings one thing, programming the chip is beyond most locksmiths ability I found.

That's what I found when trying to get a second key a while ago, hence the skeleton key I've got. Even the local locksmith that everyone assumed could do it, couldn't...Thanks folk for all your suggestions, I'll look into them.

A locksmith is the last place to go for a spare ignition key with an alarm/immobiliser fob.A good auto electrician with the correct programming software will do the job successfully at much less than you have paid at the main dealer(which is extortionate).

Had a key cut and programmed at our local Timpsons, this was for an x250 Ducato, cost £40.

definitely worth having key insurance

yep i always have it its cheap and after having to scrap a perfectly good merc250d c class because the faulty keys wouldent deactivate the imobliser .mercedes wanted an arm and a leg to replace the keys and would have had to recover the car to reprogram the thing ,i now have keycare insurance cover anything happens like the keys fail you just conveinently lose the keys and they cover any replacements .

Be grateful you don't own one of the newer Mercedes!
The procedure requires V5, photo Id, trip to main dealer, checking & photographing the Vin & a lot more

That's great value . I'm sure that wouldn't have been the Yeovil branch as to be honest though they are one of the Timpsons that do do reprogramming they didn't seem to clued up on it. Saying I would have to bring the car, not just a good key, round and they would try.

I didn't mention it was for my Porsche so maybe that make is more troublesome than others :drive:

If they can do an X250 then they should be able to do Carols.

A by product of all these fancy keys seems to be the increase in car jackings and house breakins.

I am not sure how Citroen work nowadays, but the Relay is made in Seval Italy, along with the Ducato and Boxer. On some fiats you have a red key, you cannot program without it. If you havent got it it means a new ECU and you are looking four figures. !! In other words your existing key they cant clone. Worth checking out before you start spending money.

All keys need to be present on modern vehicles so everything can be synced...

I think that's only on the pre 2002 facelifts models then came the keycard model where you needed the electronic no of the keycard now you just need any key.
But you can only get the standard key from a standard key
Or
The key with the central locking from the the central locking version key.
Simpson's do a good job but only the larger branches do central locking keys.
Any branch will do the standard key

This was at the branch in Sainsbury's at Biggleswade, it was the first x250 they had tried, they made no promise that it would work, but at £260 cheaper than the local Fiat dealer I was game. Gf ordered the key/transponder which took a day (or two?) to turn up, took the van there, they placed transponder in 'magic m/c' then went to van with transponder and original key, holding the transponder next to key fob they turned ignition on and off several times, then returned to shop, placed transponder in 'magic m/c' after quite a wait (10mins ?) the m/c indicated it had finished, key was then cut and transponder inserted, job done.

p.s. I've since been informed the Fiat dealer should 'only' have charged £120 for a non remote key, but it seems like most things they don't know their a*** from their elbow.
