Normandy ww2 sites

Have sailed around the beaches we bought a yacht back from Guernsey first stop cherbourgh then sailed round point de barfluera on to St vaast then on to grandcamp maisey ,had the pleasure of sailing into what is left of the mulberry harbour then onto Le Havre.hired a van for the day did all beaches and did the bayeux tapestry .
The atmosphere on the beaches and the knowledge of what went on at each beach is overwhelming
It a must visit .we are going back in the van in April staying near St mere Eglise
Just hope the weather is fine.grandcamp maisey is worth a stop there are still gun emplacements on the beach by the caravan site very earie and humbling .
Nice restaurant near the harbour very posh menu only in French food was superb and the bar down the road selling french fries and fish caught that day just the place to stop.

Another vote for the Gun Battery at Longues Sur Mer. Superb wild spot overlooking the Mulberry Harbour. The other poster must have been unlucky as its never been over busy when we have been there.

Also the American Cemetery at Coleville sur Mer is well worth a visit. As well as the cemetery which is immaculate and moving there is a huge free museum with cinemas and lots of WW2 stuff. You can park overnight in the car park outside of the cemetery not the internal ones.

The first section on the right hand bend was full and the second bit by the left hand hair-pin bend as you drop down had 6 or 7 on it as well :scared:

We`re not into being packed in like that so we went back to the Information Office and parked in the field behind it out of harms way.

Us another member from here and 2 other foreign vans ( Belgium ? ) spent a very spacial and pleasant night there.

This left the car park free for all the quick visits and coaches.

Have a look at "Walking Dday" by Paul Reed, its in the Battleground Europe series, one of the best guide books I think, you can buy it from Pen and Sword publishing or from good old Amazon !
We used it last year when we went over for the big one ! We even found a group of bunkers that we had been looking for, for a few years, Wn32 , thanks to this book.
A must visit is Gary Stearns excavations at Grand Camp Maisy, very raw and as it was, he has even put a few 88mm guns back in place. So much to see in Normandy, ive been there 4 times now each for 8 days and still havent seen it all !

too large did my head in gave up after two lines:idea:
