Lots of good advice above. Aire at Montville (between Dieppe and Rouen) good stop in town centre by park and swimming pool alongside Aire free town wifi and great Pompier museum in town. Bayeux just to see Bayeux tapestry a great historic account of 1066 and with surprising saucy humour in the detail.

Have a look at the Watten Bunker .. It's well worth a visit. Car park opposite where I saw a couple of MH's

V2rocket Deployment Watten

Big hole made by a TALL Boy is now a duck pond

..
The actual village where the Blockhaus is is called Eperlecques, and when we visited we would not have felt comfortable staying in the car park knowing the history of the bunker. Watten aire is one of the closer aires, and we have stayed there quite a few times now on our travels. Nice enough village with a good restaurant and a bar or two and a bakers and small super market. But the aire is quite small (about 5 places I think) so could fill up quickly in the Summer. But as said the Blockhaus is worthy of a visit.

The aire at Watten can get very very busy because it is quite small :rolleyes2:

We was there earlier this year ( mid May ) and let lucky because as we arrived one was just pulling out so we took their spot in the back corner with the fence at the side of us.

By 9pm it was overflowing :scared: 8 vans crammed inside including a Dutch van parked on the service point :mad2: and 5 outside on the road / verge :scared:

The following morning 2 of us had to ask a French guy who was blocking the entrance / exit to move so we could get out, he was not happy :mad2:

We`ll only use it as a last resort from now on

Exactly what I thought, and what I was suggesting. But I wasn't sure as we have only used Watten in the Winter. Is it me, or has the camping car population really exploded this year, well in France anyway? There seems to be far more than ever on the roads, and the popular aires are often struggling to cope. If so what happened to all this austerity in Europe we used to hear about?

I suspect the Watten aire gets so busy because of it`s proximity to Calais and Dunkirk for the ferries.

We found that further inland it was very peaceful and quiet and several times we were the one on the aire

Yes we have found the same. But there are times when driving around in some parts of France that every other vehicle is a MH.
