I've been looking for one of those Colman stove top ovens.. but they don't seem to be available in the UK anymore?

A bread maker maybe?

Sorry if there was a glaringly obvious reason you'd not considered one!

I heard you can bake bread in those double skillet things, maybe there are some users on here that could say what the results are like..
Bread maker is handy when on hookup but not much use when wilding.

We have a double skillet but the wife thinks you cannot do bread in it.

I think you could do a stottie in it but it is a Geordie flat loaf and it might sound weird to southerners. :lol-049:

bread can be made in a dutch oven or I saw this in B&Q today

I baked a cake recently in a heavy ceramic non stick saute pan with lid. The inside of the pyrex lid was lined with silver foil. A small wire rack raises the cake off the bottom of the pan into the centre of the dutch oven. The cake rose perfectly. It also cooks stuff you would normally put in an oven a perfect golden brown, and pizzas too etc. I see no reason why bread would not work in something like this. I will give it a try in mine and let you know. If successful I'll post photos of the pan type and results.

I tried baking bread in a double skillet, it was soggy and needed to be browned off in a normal oven.
I now have a halogen cooker and will be trying it in that.
No good off hookup though.

I make soda bread in my skillet and its brill, also made it in a deep pan with a lid.:tongue:

Joan has baked bread (stottie) on our Safari Chef.

I have been looking at the Colman Oven and they only seem to be available on ebaY in the US.

Amazon says it does not know when, or if, new stock will be available.

The site quoted in these posts seem to be showing them as available.

I had one years ago and it was great. When we cleared the house before going full time we found it looking rather rusty and it was thrown away.

I don't use sites so no hook up. Bread maker would be ok only on mains i think....

Bread makers are low wattage mine is 450w and I tried it in my 700w inverter the mixing motor ran ok but all the time it was making a buzzing which I believe was caused by the inverter being only a modified sine and not pure sine wave I then unplugged in case of causing damage to the breadmaker.
If you have a breadmaker that is disposable might be worth trying.

We have a 2kw inverter running off 3 x 110Ah batteries. The inverter is very efficient only drawing 1amp on standby. We have a 40amp B2B and a Gasparini LPG automatic generator, this has now been superseded by the Telco TG480 - Automatic LPG Generator 12v 20A after Gasparini went bust and Telco bought up the rights in late 2012. We also have 240w of solar, charging both the leisure and vehicle batteries on a 90%, 10% split.

After a winter in Spain wild parking, we have now put all the mains stuff into storage, as we intend to wild park more and not use caravan sites.

We have obtained a double skillet, so no longer need the George Forman grill.

We also obtained a GELERT FOLDING CAMPING TOASTER. We have ditched the mains toaster and now ordered two more from GELERT FOLDING CAMPING TOASTER GRILL WITH HANDLE NEW | eBay. They do burn out if the gas is too high

We have a gas kettle so the mains one has gone. The mains only Skybox also went in favour of a 12v HD Free-Sat one.

The skillet and Safari chef have made the Remoska redundant.

A pressure cooker made the slow cooker redundant. 12v chargers for the phones have replaced the mains ones.

I am trying to locate a 19v adaptor for the HP Pavilion g6 laptop. The one I have for the old HP pavilion laptop does not have the correct fitting for this new computer included. (EDIT. Just found one and ordered it.)

With this lot replaced, we hope we will not now need to replace the leisure batteries. They seemed to be struggling at times last winter.

The only thing I need 240v for now is to charge my shaver and for Joan's hair dryer. The hairdryer doesn't get much use in Spain.

We make bread, cakes, scones etc in the Dutch oven over the campfire. You can get Dutch ovens to use over the gas ring too though I've never tried one. I found the Breadtopia site good for conquering the techniques. Resisted sourdough for a long time but when we did try it we became hooked! :)

good choice

i have a five foot version in the garden, the small clay ones in bq tend to crack, the small steel ones are bestput the wood or charcoal to one side of the burner and use the other side for the bakeing or fish in tin foil,if you put a mesh on the chimney you can boil water for a brew
