newhaven is , of course , the closest ferry port to london , and on top of that has the best prices if you know how to book
to begin with , they have an undisclosed 0800 number that you can use instead of a premium number
doesn't matter if you book on line ? well actually it can do !
if you look at the idlines website you will see that they regularly have really cheap prices for 2/3 weeks ahead IF YOU LOOK AT THE PRICES IN EUROS! not at peak times of course ;in addition if you have a passenger over 60 and book by phone you get a 20% discount
so check when the cheap crossings are on the website , phone the 0800 number which appears to be direct to newhaven reservations , ask to pay in euros and for the discount if applicable [they will check passports on check in ]
as an example I have a reservation in 10 days
on line price in euros €87.50 les 20% €70 [6 meter by 3 metre ] at the time I booked £50
these fares come up on all 3 crossings at times , I don't like the overnight so use the early morning or teatime crossings
you can park in the port overnight at both ends , in the truck park at newhaven and outside the booking office at dieppe, for the early morning i come the night before and set the alarm , tea time I get off the boat at dieppe and go round the roundabout and park up
