New Vehicle Excise Rates

SORN it online at the end of Feb, then tax again for March. This will reset the renewal date.
I thought there had to be a 5 days between SORN & retax but can't anything with a quick Google.😊
There is no time particularly just normally you would sorn near the end of a month and re-tax it near the beginning of the month to get the best value but no actual rules as to when, IE you could sorn on the 20th then tax one the 21st of the same month but that would be a bit dumb.

When you SORN it, you receive a message explaining that you cannot re-tax it for 5 days. It's because the database is slow to update.
rolleyes
It actually only takes 2-3 days in my experience but they say allow 5.

Without getting the tax year inline with the march tax hike you could actually pay another £410 for almost all of year 6 at the higher rate, Well 11 months worth., I'll be SORNing mine in a few days time.

Having viewed this topic still confused. Reference to cars only and then references to cars and motorhomes are baboozling me.

Please could somebody catagorically state exactly what the new motorhome dvla tax rates will be for the first five years and after where the new list price exceeds £40000 for weights less than 3.5T and for weights over 3.5T.

I think it 'flashes up' on screen before you hit the SORN button, but as you say not documented in the conformation email

You are right Julian. I have a recollection of sorning a vehicle a few years back then immediately needing to put it back on the road. It was a few days before I could do that.

Coming in April there's a large supplement for cars with a list price over £40000 which applies in years 2 to 5. Something like an additional £400 each year, so around £1600 extra in total.
I can't think of any motorhome or campervan which would retail under that figure so am I right in assuming owners of any vehicles registered from 2021 onwards will drop for this
Ours is a 22 reg so I'll be taxing it in March to miss the April hike;
There is a GOV dot site you can visit which shows all new Tax bands for vehicles all you need is your vehicle emmision details to see
what applies to you this detail is shown on the V5 doc .

IF the government had any IT experience they could simply have a vehicle registration VED Web page to enable a check. whilst some sites porport to do so I've never found one, or have I missed it somehow, anyone?

My EV would have been £195 on 1st April when it was due so I renewed the VED this month starting 1st March saving me 11 months worth.

Both my Vans are PHGV so currently £165 each but I never pay that much annually as I Sorn them for every month not in use.

Here in the UK those that can afford to waste their own money (obviously most new especially premium vehicles are bought with other peoples money) seem to be getting off relatively lightly compared to the EU where they have a sales tax of potential thousands of euro depending on emmisions and weight!

The video below covers this in detail it’s a good watch and it’s amazing what his example 2005 Clio would have cost in tax if it was for sale today compared to the expensive land rover next to it

A major Tax issue overlooked by, well almost, everyone is the tax on fuel, if it comes out of a nozzle at the filling station it attracts:

Fuel duty is currently levied at a flat rate of 52.95p per litre whilst VAT is charged at 20% on both the underlying product price and the duty.

So a fill up, 60 litre tank 60 x £1.50 = 60*.5295 £31.77 + £18 Vat = £49.77 Tax for ICE Car

Now the electric 'fill up' at home AI says around £4 - £20 depending on the deal you get

So mid figure say £10 and domestic house VAT at 5% = 50 pence for EV car

The of course doesn't even include the loss of VED

Why do EV owner pay almost Zero tax to drive around?
What's the Governments plan to plug this gigantic whole? If they have one!

(In 2024-2025, the UK government expects to raise £24.3 billion from fuel duties)

I'm paying £30 and a few pence per month, for a vehicle that barely goes on the road, I need it driveable right now but come June I'll sorn it until September when we do Ireland and Scotland.
