New Vehicle Excise Rates

Coming in April there's a large supplement for cars with a list price over £40000 which applies in years 2 to 5. Something like an additional £400 each year, so around £1600 extra in total.
I can't think of any motorhome or campervan which would retail under that figure so am I right in assuming owners of any vehicles registered from 2021 onwards will drop for this
Ours is a 22 reg so I'll be taxing it in March to miss the April hike;

Apart from the supplement, the vehicle excise licence for many cars is rising significantly. Luckily, my road tax renews on March 1st. :giggle:

My Volvo has recently dropped from £520.00 to £224.00 a year, I assume its because its 5 years old but me be wrong.

The supplement seems to affect cars up to 5 years old including electric ones

My van is private/light goods up to 3500kg for taxation so it's £345 for me. Surely that's the rate for most of us on here.

Hi ya number14,

my last 3 Livaboard homes have all been PHGV (5000kg) & each was taxed at around the £180 mark up to 2023.
My current Livaboard vehicle is 4000kg, NOT PHGV -

(Don’t get me started on that one with DVLA 😡😤😡) & taxed for the last 2 years at £345 ish 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s all Bonkers isn’t it Drover !
Certainly is...I have a chausson suite relax not a heavy goods vehicle...
Just found out though some emission zones give entry free with a blue badge instead of £100 or so
(It was too hot to do anything this afternoon @ 38c) so had my head in the phone.
I'll look into that in a few weeks when we are back from Cambodia

It’s actually for five years after first year normal rate. It’s an additional luxury rate of £410 in addition to normal rate adding up to £2050. But it does not apply to motorhomes or camper vans and it’s not retrospective. This was brought in in 2017 by the tories, one of the most unjust taxes I have ever known. The big change in April will affect EVs which will also become liable for this tax. Normal rates should increase by around rate of inflation.

If you apply to Scotland the whole country is free with a BB.

I think there was a short window of time where Motorhomes were included in this and some unfortunate buggers were stuck with 5 years of higher road tax. I can't remember the details but it got recinded, but again was not restrospectively recinded for those vehicles that were registered while still in force, so those owners had to suck it up.
Vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000
You have to pay an extra £410 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ of more than £40,000. You do not have to pay this if you have a zero emission vehicle.
The list price is the published price of the vehicle before it’s registered for the first time. It’s the price before any discounts are applied.
You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed).

Not relevant now for those vans anymore anyway of course.

No what happened David was they were landed with a bill of around £2500 when they bought their vans. But after pressure from the industry ended it. But those who paid never received a refund.

Also I erred the £410 supplement is paid from day one, but included in the price of the car you buy. It’s a disgraceful tax that should be abolished. I almost bought a car with a list price of £39,995 which by £5 was exempt from this draconian tax. If the car had a listed price of £40,001 it would incur the luxury levy tax.

That sounds like "DVLA making it up as they go" BS to me -- similar to the 'van with windows' fiasco. My van (2001 Ducato Maxi based) was originally registered as a PHGV but I found to my horror that the previous owner had downplated it and it was PLG on the V5. The dealer got SVTech to issue a certificate to restore it to the 3850kg original MAM and DVLA issued the new V5 as "PHGV" without issues.
