New Tyres

I could only afford to buy two new tyres, so after discussing the advice from this thread with several well-known tyre dealers, it was thought best to fit one new tyre to the front and one new tyre to the rear.

The result: my motorbike now handles better than it has done for ages!

Yo
Just put Avon Storm Ultras on my Pan. Feels so much better and really grippy.

Thanks to Northerner for this thread. I was unaware of the industry recommendation to put new tyres on the rear. Just had my camper serviced and the report came back that I have 3mm on the front and 6mm on the rear. I am seriously thinking of swapping the tyres around because I prefer to replace all the tyres at the same time.

Just had the two new tyres fitted on front this morning. I went for the Avon Avanza AV9 215/70 R15 R (109), 8Ply.

£204 fitted & balanced. would have been slightly less had I done all four.

I've just had Toyo fitted 217/75-16s fitted. They seem to work better than the Michelin Campings that I had before. They are also quieter and seem to help with braking far better than the Michelins

Something that was a bit scary was the age of the tyres. I'd checked a couple and they were 2006 and 2005 respectivly. The other two were 2005 and 2001 ****! There was plenty of tread on all of them but I was surprised at the 2001 tyre. I would have thought that itwas well past its safe usage time?

although your tyres are 215/70/R15 C (C= commercial) you can replace with 225/70/R15C which are more available and therefore cheaper, just done the same with mine, been given qoutes of, £135 plus but got them for £80 each balanced and fitted by a local fitter, Costco don't stock any of the above.

A dumb question. If you put on larger tyres, would that in any way change or interfere with the performance of the MH, because of the ratio of the gear box or any other part of the mechanics. I have 215/70/R15 C on mine, would that also make the MH slightly higer of the ground? Also, would the 225 fit onto the 215 rims? Just curious.

Just had 2 215/70/ R 15 8PR Avon AV9 109R TL fitted (Don't know what it all stands for) on the Hymer for £180. Thought it was a good price

yes ,changing tyre size can alter the gearing. using the sizes mentioned you may get longer legs (go faster at lower revs . but can make very steep hills mountains in spain etc harder to go up. .yes the vehicle will sit higher. i would guess the tyre will fit the rim . dont know enough about the rim size in question to give a real answer. but you should tell the insurers as you definately have changed the specification.
on commercials over 3,500kg when they get a ministry plate all tyre specs are noted it becomes illegal to use un spec tyres. not quite the case with campers ,but better to be safe than sorry.
i,m not usually one for saying insurers will or wont pay out think too many worry too much but wrong size tyres are a definate no.
i used to work for a well known tyre company but now i shop around yes some are very cheap some very expensive . but i,m not convinced you get what you pay for. at the moment i am using tigar commercial tyres made in serbia an all season 215/75/r16c seems smooth ride good off road and wearing very well . had them on two years now cost £58 fitted and balanced 2yr ago.would definately use them again. although my unit isnt ministry plated i feel i must keep to the old plate tyre sizes just to be sure .
i used to like uniroyal tyres but you dont see them around lately. the uniroyal max t2 was a great 185x14 tyre for camper and commercial vans in the 70,s -80,s good grip ,wore well and looked good .

Van Hawks a go go

I have just treated the Hymer to 4 new tyres, I couldn't get the Michellin Camping Tyres without a long wait so I settled for Firestone Van Hawks 215/75/R16c I was told they are good Comercial tyres and of as good spec as the Michys, they came out at £125 each fitted , balanced etc. I bought them at ASDA , Balmer Tyres Chandlersford Hants, after several phone calls around my local area this was my best deal. My van is a six wheel tag axle and the middle tyres are original 74,000 miles ,I had them inspected at the time and was assured that they were good, not perished and plenty of tread left and did not need replacement so I did not change them, rumour has it that tag axles wear out the tyres quicker, not true in my case.Had I not done the mileage I have probably the middle tyres would have been perished, so it seems use it or lose it.

I have a transit van that has a complete set of Van Hawks and they just don't seem to wear out. Also the tyres come new with very deep tread. I really like them they have a very tough workhorse good honest 'feel' to them. I liked them so much I've just bought a pair for the front of my Hymer and my only regret is that I didn't replace the rear 'old but got tread left on them' tyres at the same time, maybe in the spring.
