New stricter driving laws for England & Wales

I take your point Bill but many things are ageist as is your suggestion. Some cancer screening is ageist. Bus passes are ageist. etc, etc it's no good for someone to claim something is ageist just because it may affect them negatively personally, whilst ignoring all the positive points of ageism. Ageism can also apply to the young.
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you on this one Chris.
Getting old and forgetful :)
Throughout our lives from cradle to death ageism affects us all.
Education, when we can get married, vote, how we are treated by the law, when we can learn to drive etc etc.
But my point was this is different, because unlike age defined things poor eyesight is not controlled by laws or rights based purely on age, it affects all age groups. My sister required glasses from age four, but I only required reading glasses in my late forties, and can drive with unaided vision to this day.
But when setting out requirements for driving certain things have to be taken into consideration, and with regards to health issues one of them is age. And statistics will show clearly that in the vast majority of cases it’s the elderly who suffer problems with their vision. But they are not alone, younger drivers can and do likewise, but in a much lower scale. Therefore to only test the elderly whilst completely ignoring the young in my honest opinion is ageist, but not the same type of ageism described in your post.
Why not when renewing their driving licences should younger drivers not have to submit an eye test every ten years, I can see no reason why not. That way no matter what your age is renewal of licences for all should involve a mandatory eye test, and make our roads safer Chris. Also on an unrelated note, having eye tests done has other benefits, they can give indications of general heath. I myself had to have a blood test after my recent visit to the opticians. Apparently the scan carried out possibly indicating a health issue I am nor aware of.
