New stricter driving laws for England & Wales

Speaking as a resident of Scotland, this announcement is about a possible change in the law in England. No mention of Wales or Scotland or NI.

How is that going to work?

I know Scotland already has a lower drink drive limit, so if you are breathalised by a Scottish policeman in Scotland you have to pass a lower threshold. I get how that works.

But needing an eye test to retain your licence in England? Well they are ALL issued from England,
Driving licences are not devolved, so any rule change applies to all, drink driving laws are devolved.

Anyone can see if their eyesight is of a suitable standard. When you have a routine eye test the results are on the certificate you get from the Optician. The requirements for eyesight quality are listed on the DVSA website for the various driving categories. You just need to compare them.

I agree, it is lazy, sloppy journalism from someone who is a Political investigations correspondent, not a motoring correspondent.

Ban people who are incapable of parking within the white lines of a parking bay. Ban people who play Boom Boom music at 2,000 watts. Ban people who pimp up their Fiat 500 and the such. Ban people who have pink cars. Ban people who throw trash out of the window. Ban people who ride up your bumper, Ban people who feel entitled [that's all Audi drivers then]. Ban people who don't know how to indicate. Ban people who still insist on using their phone whilst driving.

Finally, ban coppers from driving, fit a blue flashing light to their helmets and make them go 'nur, nuur, nur, nuur, nur, nuur whilst running to the nearest tweet emergency.

Sorted.

A tad early to be on the Shrooms, Ral.

What's wrong with pink cars. You need to get in touch with your feminine side.

I would just ban people who want to ban everybody else, particularly when they wear a green mankini :)

Why not just change the rules completely and say every has to renew license every 3 years with mandatory eye test? From bits I am hearing on the news there could be lots of opposition. At end of the day though if eyesight isn't good enough then we shouldn't drive. News was just saying biggest risk in accidents is younger drivers at 25% involved in accidents. Who knows what's best, roads have certainly changed. Would hate to lose mine though

Edit: Err, I should have put, the reason I say everyone eye test at 3 years is it looks like its ageist as it is

I remember my father complaining about the Speedo on his car, and not being able to see markings from 10 to 50mph, and he put pieces of tape on 'glass' for those speeds. After he died I drove car and was puzzled as I could see markings no problem, eventually I twigged that if I shut my right eye you couldn't see the markings, so he must have been near blind in one eye!

Not sure how that would work. If they are not up to a suitable standard they would have to continue driving to improve.

Or did you mean they would have to take lessons to improve?
Possibly, or just listen to, and follow the advice given by the examiner on the debrief after the test. I am a driving instructor, so am slightly biased in favour of extra lessons. I have had insurance companies insist on older drivers having an assesment on their driving from aqualified instructor, and it only took a couple of lessons to bring their driving up to a suitable standard

What they should do is make those responsible in the councils for maintaining the roads in a safe state to use sit a test on how to do their fekkin jobs and if they fail they should be sacked. :)
That would see a few vacancies at our council.

but if Ral gets his way we won’t need roads, because nobody apart from Ral would have a licence :p

I have type 2 diabetes, so they tell me and a cataract in my right eye so get at least 2 eye tests a year, and have so far passed with flying colours, but if hearing and walking were to be considered I'll be snookered !!!!!

When you listen to the volume some folk play their music they can’t hear a thing outside, as for walking that’s got nothing to do with driving a car. Even people with early onset Alzheimer’s can sometimes still drive.

Do specsavers check their staffs eyesight?
