whats all this about new driving licence rules coming in for over 70s.??????

There's another recent thread about it Trixie but I can't find it for the life of me!

Fact is you will have to declare things like eyesite & anything like dementia or body ailments which may hinder your driving, if the gove get there way you may have to have a medical and eye site test.
Also i have found older cars/vans reged from before 2013 and up to 2017 will be paying short of £500 road tax, my runabout car falls into this bracket.

I`ve been saying for years that older drivers should have to do some form of practical test rather than the crazy " tick boxes " system they do now

A simple test free of charge using their own vehicle which they are used to driving should also be used (y)

An experienced examiner will know within 10 - 15 minutes whether the person is fit to continue driving or not

That actually makes a lot of sense. A short, practical assessment in their own vehicle sounds fairer than relying solely on paperwork. It would give a better idea of real-world ability without putting too much pressure on people. I reckon most older drivers who are still confident on the road wouldn’t mind proving they’re still up to it either.

Looks like im into a baby walker then. 😂

Too many horror stories about older drivers not to have a proper test for them in their later years (and I'm 70 next year). I hope I realise when it's time to give up my licence, before I become another grim statistic.

Problem is here many oldies live in the sticks and require a car for shops doctors hospital church etc, is the gov going to suply a free taxi service for them.

Explain that to my neighbour, who was involved in a hit and run in a supermarket carpark. Driver turned out to be an eighty- something lady, who has now surrendered her licence. My neighbour still has mobility issues.
Letting people with diminished reactions drive is not the answer to the elderly choosing to live in rural areas, and neither is expecting the government to supply free rides.

For me a driving licence is not a right it’s a privilege given to us by society. It’s reckoned 10% of over 70s would fail the required eyesight test. I got my first 3 year extension last year, I would have nothing against having an eye test, and a medical before I get my next 3 year licence. We should not be able to simply declare we are fit to drive after the age of 70.

There are waiting lists now for people wanting driving tests. This would only add to the problem.
It would be a good idea if everyone had an eye test when they renewed their licence,10 years for younger people, 3 years for over 70s.The medical and eye test I had at 70 was simple enough to do.

Maybe not but do we let the elderly just fade away, they have worked most of there lives and deserve better help, yes if infirm or slow minded then of course remove the licence as dangerus to others.

I have one eye going down hill, worse at night, so will have to go private at £2000, 5 year wating on helth service in norn iron.
