Pudsey is correct, if you drive in a gear to high and cannot accerate then you burn more fuel, best practice is just into the green on rev counter, known as the sweet spot, this is the point where induction flow is not being pushed in but just about static inbetween a push/force and suction, above this turbo starts to force induction on deisel, on a non petrol turbo engine when it comes on the cam this is known as ram efect, hence the power band and sudden acceration.

Drive between 2K and 3K rpm and you can't go far wrong. I never look at the speedometer, I glance at the rev counter and listen to the sound of the engine when I am not looking at the revs. My eyes are glued to the road ahead. I only have one job to do and that is to safely get from A to B.
