Hi There, I'm so glad I found this forum, I hope it's the first of many motorhome adventures.
I'm from Portugal and rented a motorhome to enjoy Scotland, from Edinburgh to Portree Harbour. I would like some help, my first time in a motorhome and I couldn't find precise information on places to fill up and empty the motorhome... And of course, I accept all help and tips to make this trip an unforgettable one. I hope you can help me
**forgive me if there are any mistakes in vocabulary

Your English is good enough down south . But up there use google translate. Lol

Just go and use our poi s . Drive it like you stole it and you will be forever picking you stuff up of the floor !.
pack heavy items up against the front walls of cupboards ie front of cab walls
Works well when braking hard on the smaller roads.

Just give the chap the help he is asking for. It is a one off trip in a rented motorhome, what is the point in joining the forum?

Hi Solange, hopefully someone will give you direct help. Where are you now and where do you plan to travel to? If you are a Facebook member there is good helpful information on there. I am not a Facebook user but someone will give you help to find motorhome communities on there.

There are two sites that help with finding places to stay and fill and empty toilet and put water on.
These are Searchforsites which costs a small amount and WEBSITE BLOCKED BY ADMIN which is free.,

Another import thing is what type of gas system you have for cooking or maybe heating. Once you know let us all know.

What does the rental cover provide you with, chairs to sit on outside and a table ? Plates knives and forks ? I am sure you will want to enjoy your views.

It’s a beautiful place how long are you travelling that will help us as well ;)

Welcome to Scotland.
When are you visiting here?
Have you got a route you plan to take or do you want suggested places to go to?
On search for sites you will find places to fill with water and empty toilet waste as well as campsites, aires and free stopovers.
Has your rental company given you any information on places to stopover?
Enjoy this lovely country.

Hi welcome. Most towns with harbours have some sort of motorhome parking and in most cases you will find water there. Going by the route you intend taking you will come across other motorhome people in the area just ask them most will be glad to help. A lot of caravan sites now let you use there facilities for a small fee usually £5 you will find some useful information and a list of places on here. https://campra.org.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=8

Hi Solange, I would like to suggest contacting your rental company as they should be able to provide you with some information. I would also suggest watching some videos on YouTube about driving on small Scottish roads so you have an idea of how single track roads with passing places work! If you’re passing by Tarbet on Loch Lomond they have a waste and grey water disposal point, and most paid for sites have water fill up and grey water disposal. Just be aware that it is against the law to dump grey water and waste except at disposal points. This forum and map of Points of interest (poi) will mostly give excellent advise on places you can park up for free for one night on lay-bys, but these won’t have any services at all and are first come basis, so you have to have a backup plan. As a new Motorhomer ourselves, we mostly use google maps to search paid for touring/camping spots. Hope that helps and welcome to Scotland hope you have a great time!

Hi there,

This year will be our 4th year touring Scotland in a motorhome, but we only started wildcamping the 2nd year when we went to Shetland. We were new to motorhoming as well.
Be aware of the fact that in Scotland you basically have the choice between campsites with amenities and wild camping spots without. Equipped parking spots like you would have in France are very few to non-existant. However, ferry harbour tend to have greywater disposal.
Also, depending on the season, the area from Edinburgh to Portree might be very busy, campsites full as well as wildcamping spots. We tend to pre-reserve our first and last night at a campsite. The last night being really important as you have to cleanup the motorhome before rendering.

Last but not least...get yourself a full membership. It will get you a map of possible wildcamping spots.

Enjoy your holiday!

If you become a member you will get access to the POI also download search for sites which is useful for free pitches and campsites.

I'm thinking about joining the group, I'm sure I'll come back, and if I don't, I'll wait until I'm ready to buy a motorhome, because with age, traveling more than 10,000 km on a motorcycle (as in most vacations) will get heavy

We already have an itinerary of Edinburgh - Dundee - Aberdeen - Inverness, Isles of Skye being the most extreme point where the Skye Museum of Island Life is located. I accept all suggestions, we bought a guide with information on stops for motorhomes in Europe, we didn't want to be so tied to the campsite, but we realized that there are few dump and supply places (by the guide and internet) We will pick up the motorhome on the 6th of September,I hope that when picking up the motorhome the company will provide us with the other information

Thanks for the tips, I've been watching a lot of videos on youtube, learning how everything works (we rented a motorhome for 5 people and there are only two of us, plenty of space for each one "laughs" I had a little training when renting an SUV in Malta, but I was really very surprise after running through the maps the roads we will take. And certainly we will not do incorrect dump, knowing the options besides the campsites in case of unforeseen circumstances. I'm sure it will be an unforgettable trip, it would be our honeymoon trip (it would be by motorcycle) unfortunately we went through Covid :( - plans postponed and suddenly this possibility came up and we decided to do something different, rent the motorhome

I don't know the model of the motorhome, it's for 5 people (there are only two of us), I've seen a lot of videos about gas and heating precautions, as soon as I know I'll let you know, and any advice from those who already have experience is always welcome :)

Thanks for the site, there is certainly a lot of help from motorhome travellers, I was raised camping with my family since I was a little girl, it wasn't just a campsite but a big family where everyone helped each other, they are experiences that transform us, although we don't have the notion of it as a child, but they stay there inside us

You may find it useful to use your mobile 'phone to video the handover of the van from the rental company. That way you won't have any confusion when it comes to turning on water, heating and the various other systems in the motorhome.

Have a great trip.

Don't be surprised if you can't easily understand very broad Scottish accents.

Many in England often don't understand the regional accents either, especially those around the Glasgow area - isn't that right @Wully?! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::cool:

Hope you have a lovely trip, enjoy Scotland (y)🤗

Someone above has given the link to CAMpRA (which is a campaign group that supports the provision of aire-type facilities).
Not to be confused with CAMRA (for traditional ales, ciders and other drinks)...
... but more important is CaMPA (link below) which supports camping and motorhoming tourism. This link shows black (toilet) waste disposal locations in Scotland, most will also allow domestic and grey water disposal and have fresh water. Some are campsites, some aires, some stand-alone. The interactive map gives all the information. The website also has other informative pages that you might want to look at.
