Yes its Road tax renewal time again
The extortionate renewal price highlights the cost we have to pay for our
Chosen leisure motorhomes!
An example.
A small works van/car doing an average of 40,000 miles per vehicle
The average road tax per vehicle is, £125

1 Motorhome doing approximately 12,000 miles per year, Road tax, £ 190
Absolutely No logical comparison
Personally I have NO interest in the eco/green or carbon reasons.
They are in my view are just a tax ruse,
My reasons to complain are purely financial.

Here here I second that.:D:D

Come to Belgium:
I pay 0 road tax, with a '30 days card'. I only have to fill in the day I drive in Belgium. (when I drive to Scandinavia for 2 months I only drive in B for 2 days) :p And moreover: nobody could certify I fill it in correctly :D:D
That's the Belgian way: allways use the backdoor :rolleyes::cool::confused:;)

Chosen leisure motorhomes!
.

There you go I will give you a clue ..middle word leisure !!!

Of course the government see this as some type of capitlist tendency...You know working for a living and improving your lot is not exactly socialist is
it ?

Far better your disposable income is re apportioned to support pregnant teenagers the misunderstood druggies and burglars.

Occasionally people ask me why Ii am happier abroad...not difficul tto work out is it ?

Well let me see if I can cheer you up.

My RFL is due at the end of March. approx £110 for 6 months which will take me to the end of September.

I leave these shores as things stand mid March and realistically I wont return until at least Mid October and possibly later than that mid Nov.

So I have to spend £110 or so taxing a vehicle which will not turn a wheel on a Uk road. !!!!:eek:less than happy chicken !!!

I need to tax to keep things legal but quite honestly it is a joke.If I sorn potential insurance issues, if I dont tax as soon as I hit DOver I can expect a pull off an Anpr camera.

A joke and travesty

12 months road tax for a 3500kg (PLG) motorhome is currently £190.
this will increase in april this year to £200.

over 3500kg (PHGV)....i cant find anything to say its increasing but expect another £5 to £10 on top of the current £165.

DfT website states.....

Light goods vehicles (up to 3,500kg revenue weight)
There is one vehicle tax rate for light goods vehicles registered on or after 1 March 2001 and one discounted rate for vans that met Euro 4 emissions standards before these became mandatory. From 1 January 2009, diesel vans that meet Euro 5 emissions standards and are first registered between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2010 have also been eligible for the reduced rate of vehicle tax.
The following rates will apply to light goods vehicles from April 2010:
Tax Class
2010 – 11 Rate
Light goods vehicles...£200
Euro 4 & 5 LGV..........£125

Private HGV (exceeding 3,500kg revenue weight) (TC10)

12 months rate........£165.00
6 months rate.........£90.75

yes thats the word leisure
my local leisure /caravan dealer has never had it so good selling more new vans than ever before.
he thinks all caravan owners are idiots paying the earth for there new vans and simple gadgets and are willing to pay him his 30% mark up on everything.
i assume he and the many motorhome dealers do not think we are in this Category !( or do they )
me thinks yes

No problem over here: even the tax responsable said: "Who cares...? " (this is Belgium you know ....) :) Honni soit qui mal y pense :)

Does Belgium still exist Leo? No Republic of Flanders yet ?
It is funny as Flanders is not very good at promoting itself. I cannot find the VL stickers!

Just had my road tax renewal drop thro the door today; £205, PLG class, for my Compass Avantgarde 120 2.2 litre diesel, seems a bit steep especially as my mates larger & heavier vehicle is £165 PHGV ?
What are the pro's & con's of the two taxation classes? Can you change from PLG to PHGV to save some dosh ? Would you need to get some work done and get it re-plated to exceed the 3,500 kg capacity?

Cheers for any info

Pete :D

I pay £200 for my Roo. My husband, who has the same car unconverted, pays just £125. No justice at all

Many motorhome chassis's are capable of being uprated over the 3500 kg limit without any modification, you need to check what the base vehicle allows. In my case te Renault Master is normally plated at 3.5 but can be changed to 3.85 without any work being required. The norm is to have the van at the 3.5 limit as anybody can drive it on a car license. Anybody who passed their driving test before 1997 can drive a vehicle up to 7500 kg but after that date you can only drive up to 3500 kg. Also in Europe I think that many countries only allow up to 3500 without a further test.

The downside for you is that you might have to pay (an extortionate amount ) for what can be just a paper exercise. I think SvTech - Special Vehicle Technology is a company that can maybe advise you but there are others.
