Mpg

vauxhall vivaro 2.5 600 miles a week Manchester /Chester .The morning drive on the way to work I pay no attention to the most economical way to drive ,I just want to get to work, the drive home is dependent on traffic fill up to fill up 33mpg.
my new /old 508 merc 3.7 ltr have'nt yet been anywhere in it but I dont even want to think aboutthe mpg ,but I tend to go a long with a previous post whats it matter just stuff the fuel in and enjoy the trip, the way of life is priceless and its got to be better than costa del plenty all inclusive or not

The reason I wanted to know if the mpg was about right, was that I need to save to go away for a couple weeks touring. Next year planning to go down to Monza for Italian F1 I think the fuel will be in the region of £500 - £600 for me it's a big expense.

I travel at about the same speed as HGV's and sometimes get a bit of a tow (you don't have to be sitting on his rear bumper). This equates to about 2,000 RPM in 5th gear which is economical and since owning the van, I am averaging around 23 mpg on a 5 tonne MAM tag axle with the 2.8 jtd engine.

This economy drops quickly on single track roads as I am down to 2nd gear in places and 3rd at best. It is quite rare to do a long haul on Motorways and Dual Carriageways but my mpg improves significantly.

In retrospect its probably a bit blaze of me to say 'stick the fuel in and drive' it is an expense and has to be considered ,but save hard and enjoy the trip

Put it in perspctive; how much would it cost to fly there & hire locally? I doubt you could do it for 600 squid, especially if you have family with you. The next question is what else might you do with the cash & how much do you want to do that holiday? Maybe you could persuade some one to come with you on a cost sharing basis?

You will have the memories for years to come, but the sacrifices may also be with you for some time!

Decisions, decisions, decisions, (as JFK scribbled on his blotter in the 60's)

We have been out for the last 8 months and done 5000 from door to door and have averegc 32 MPG ,on a auto trail cheftan 2.8 jtd ,but it has been chipped to 155 bhp this has a real benifit ,with a 4.5 ton weight

We went away to the home of the Bugatti Owners Club at Prescott Hill Climb (a bit NE of Cheltenham, Glos) last weekend. Great place and event to visit btw. Anyhow....

Sully the ole tub pleasantly surprised me by averaging 30.5mpg over the weekend. Bearing in mind that the whole trip from SW Wales to the Cotswolds and back isn't exactly flat level roads I reckon that's pretty good for an LDV LWB Hi-Top with a short-geared Tranny 2.5Di lump dragging the whole plot along.

I do regular trips from Glasgow to Sunderland and I'm getting around 32 to 34MPG in an old SWB Renault Master with a 2.2 DCi engine. I try to keep it around 60MPH.

Will you still be doing the trips next season?

I was not sure if you were a fan of the Club or just the Manager. :D

autoquest 100

We drive an Autoquest 100 overcab, with a 2.2 litre diesel. We seem to average just under 30mpg. Last week on a trip to Scotland 700 miles each way, I kept the speed below 50 and on one of the fills got 35.4 and the other 32.6 mpg.
It seems that if I keep it below 50 it does really well, so thats what I shall be doing in future.

VW COMPASS CALYPSO ,,based on a T 4 ---2.4 non turbo no intervooler ,,about 450 before reserve

retuns about 32-36 mpg

I used to own a lika 6 on a iveco 3512 chassis rear wheel drive twin rear wheels over 4 tons it didnt seem to matter how it was driven used to return 21 mpg

We have a Hymer 684 on a Fiat Ducato chasis with a 2.8ltr engine. I tend to use cruise control as much as possible and it constantly returns about 25 mpg averaged over the whole trip, so you are not too far out.

using cruise control uses more juice

Burstner 8.2m tag axle, 5.2ton, Renault 3litre 6 speed manual, last trip to France, Spain, Portugal etc 7000 miles averaged 26mpg. Can push this up to 29mpg on motorway, steady cruising at 63-65mph, we think its pretty good for the size and weight.

V interesting thread- especially for info on big vans.

We a more minimalist : Flat top VW 2.5, 130 php mapped to 180, used as everyday motor. Over 40K average 37mpg, both before and after map. Cruise at 70 where possible, gentle accel though his is quite brisk with this power, apart from a few 80 in fourths to overtake ;-)

When I fitted knobbly all-weather tyres the mpg clearly dropped to 35 though- I really ought to get some more wheels and leave them just for winter.
