Moules Mariniere ...it cant get any better surely !!

Hi I went to a campsite called Mother Ivy's bay in Devon i think and you could pick them at low tide but i was not to sure about the quality of the water their so left them alone, but have had them in France on my travels.

Snowbirds.

I vividly remember a beautiful summer day on Île de Ré, harbour side, working my way through a large bowl of moules, done in cidre sauce....yummy.

Yes- but what is it with the frites - just dont soak up the yummy sauce like bread

All this talk of delicious seafood takes me back to cruising the Canal du Midi near Narbonne . 2 families , 2 boats.

We'd had a good lunch and nobody was too hungry ,by early evening , The adults were relaxing around a vrac of Vin rose' and the kids were aloft with a crabline over the side , baited with ham.

Suddenly all hell let loose ! screaming, scrambling , banging and clattering. They had a good sized Eel thrashing around on the hook.

I grabbed the bread knife and eventually managed to get a grip on the wriggling Eel, Reversed the knife and whacked it a couple of time on it's head.... No impression at all... I think it enjoyed it. I grabbed the spare mooring pin.... that worked!

Cleaned, chopped into 3/4 inch sections ,flash fried with butter and garlic, finished in dry white wine , garnished with chopped wild sage, growing on the towpath and fresh ground black pepper... Paradise !

By the time the fourth Eel had been despatched .... We had to confiscate the crabline .

That is the thing though isn't it, fresh and guaranteed fresh be cause you caught it yourself, My m8 who is a moderator with me on another forum sells fresh free range eggs, he gives them to me foc but says test them first, the kids pick them and they might miss one or two so how can they be fresh?, we grow veg in the garden and nothing tastes better than straight out of the ground

I think you are right . I met up with a student that lived with us in the UK, Her husbands parents on holiday so time out to feed rabbits , sheep pigeons etc all eventually destined for the table .

They had tried fixing me up i think with a french girl, sweet enough but no chemistry, Anyway after animals fed garden to table 25 mins ...Bernadette did the most amazing appetizer bread brushed with fresh tomato seasoned ...simple ...in my mind part of the charm no doubt was the freshness priceless.

good food, good company C'est la vie

Channa

Majorcan variation:

Lightly toast a split Baggett, rub with a large peeled garlic clove...like sandpaper.
Drizzle with olive oil, top with a thin layer of fresh, ripe pureed plum tomatoes, blended with black pepper, sea salt and marjoram.return to grill. Warm gently.

Mmmmm! Great with a mature goats cheese, thinly sliced, and olives.
