Does anybody know if there are any changes to the road tax for new motorhomes in the pipeline? Currently as far as I know, if the vehicle doesn't have the Co2 emissions & has the type approval M1 & under 3500 kg then it is taxed as a PLG it is £235. When we bought earlier this year the dealer did say he thought that it was going to change in that motorhomes over £40k would be liable for the extra tax of £320 for the next 5 years. Some people might say if you can afford a new motorhome then you can afford the extra tax. The starting price of most new motorhomes is over £40k, very few are below this, with luxury cars though there is plenty of choice of buying a vehicle well under this price.

This is the current situation

Vehicle tax rates - GOV.UK

Vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000
You have to pay an extra £320 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000.

You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed).

Check the list price with your dealer so you know how much vehicle tax you’ll have to pay.

Fuel type Single 12 month payment Single 12 month payment by Direct Debit Total of 12 monthly payments by Direct Debit Single 6 month payment Single 6 month payment by Direct Debit
Petrol or diesel £465 £465 £488.25 £255.75 £244.13
Electric £320 £320 £336 £176 £168
Alternative £455 £455 £477.75 £250.25 £238.88

I read it slightly differently I think the bit quoted is a sub heading under the heading
Cars and some motorhomes registered on or after 1 April 2017
You’ll pay a rate based on a vehicle’s CO2 emissions the first time it’s registered.
This applies to: cars
some motorhomes
Your motorhome’s included if both the following apply:

it’s in the M1SP category - check with your dealer if you’re not sure
its CO2 emissions are included on the ‘type approval certificate’ (this might be called a ‘certificate of conformity’ or ‘individual vehicle approval’)
If you have a different kind of motorhome, you pay tax in a different way.

So if the MoHo is M1SP or the CO2 isn't included the £320 isn't applied.

But don't take my word for it, it all seems as clear as mud.

They do not apply the co2 as the testing involved is to great for specialist vehicles (ie most motorhomes). I do not believe this is changing.

The statement "if you can afford a new motorhome then you can afford" really makes me angry, we had similar said to us when we went into Tourist Information in Cornwall, after asking if there was anywhere we could park overnight, as we did not need a campsite. The answer "if you can afford a motorhome you can afford a campsite".. my wife's answer " we are still paying for our motorhome, and hence do not need to pay again for facilities that we have on board". :mad1:
