Motorhome or Motor Caravan?

I think the beauty of a motorhome is that you can use it like a caravan if you want, put an awning up and stop for long periods on a campsite.Whereas a caravan can't be used like a motorhome. We were tuggers for 20 years and had some great holidays when the kids were small, now with 12 years of motorhome ownership we are on our own most of the time,(occasionally the granddaughter comes with us)we prefer the freedom and easier touring of a motorhome.I can't see us ever going back to a caravan but you never know if circumstances change.

I think that sums it up very well. Best of both worlds. In the UK we treat the van a bit like a Caravan as there are about three places we go. There is one CL we go to on the coast and we just stay there for weeks on end and use the scooter and push bikes, Isle of Arran similar and the Lakes we do a bit of touring but often base ourselves in one place and use the bike. On the continent we tour but even there I am finding I am spending more time in one place and only move on when we have seen everything we want to see or got bored. Im not a big fan of moving on everyday anymore.

As for the forum being quiet, they all are, its not just here.

Perhaps it’s just got to the point where there are to many forums. There seems to be forums for just about everything. I did notice that Wildcamping is slipping down the listings on Google. I suppose the other problem is that we have heard it all before. You don’t need to start a topic now you just do a search of the archives. I was a.member on MH Fun and that’s just as bad. One of their main topics is who can fit the most expensive bits. Only difference is they all que up to get it fitted whereas on here they watch the pennies.

That is exactly the same for us,when we first got a motorhome we were moving around constantly only occasionally settling in one spot for several days, perhaps it's a sign we are getting old.

Perhaps you're right. The topics have no discussion value any longer, and by the time they get to bottom of the first page the comedians have hijacked the thread and joke between themselves. It would be a pity if this forum disappeared because it is very useful for wilding spots.

I think for me the appeal of seeing new places started to wear off as we have probably seen the best of it all in Western Europe at least. I dont enjoy driving the van as much anymore either. Last summer we found as we have for the last few years that we returned to as many old favourites as we found new places. In 2016 it was the first year we didnt venture abroad and had six weeks on the Isle of Arran and 7 weeks on a CL at Flamborough on the coast. Completely different but I really loved it. Last summer in four months abroad the van only did 3000 miles but the bike did over 3500. In that respect we are very much like Tuggers now in that the van gets parked as a base and we go out every day on the bike, only moving on when we have run out of things to do. When we first got the van a decade ago we ping ponged around Europe in a ridiculous fashion doing stupid miles with no real agenda or even a decent sense of direction. Anything over 40 miles now when moving on is considered a long drive. :D

Hi Gang,
For me i am only UK based theses days, I class The Nest as a Motorhome as it IS in fact My ONLY 24/7 HOME ! (Even though it says Motor Caravan on the Log Booky thingy). With the exception of a few month last year I still move pretty much on ave every other night. Flanked by one night stops & Extended Stayes when appreciate. I only stay on a site of some description about every 8th night on ave. & very much like the idea of ONE vehicle/Living space as apposed to Tugging a caravan, but that’s just personal opinion of course.
Yeah sometimes a bit of a Pain or Chore but VERY quickly up graded to a Pleasure or actually a look forward too when doing my route & rounds to see my Favourite people & places with renewed vigour no matter how many times ive actually visited them before.
I’m predicting I’ve got a fair few years of doing the same for a time yet !.

Use ours like a motorhome when it’s me and Lin, use it like a caravan if we have grandchildren with us, ie on a site with safe play areas and other children.

We are the same my Grandson like to play out on a play area use the swimming pool play games at the kids club and interact with other children, and we enjoy seeing him having fun. If were on our own we don't use sites much

Hi there

I had caravans for years but never wanted to travel far with it and when on sites we never used the facility's except the showers, With the motorhome we went to France with no problems at al and loved it we also did a lot of wild camping in Scotland with on problems.
I had to sell my van due to lack of use because the kids wouldn't come and it was costing a lot of money to stand and do nothing for most of the year .
The kids are now coming to an age where they can be left by themselves so hopefully I can get another van and get back to what I love..

Pretty much the same here ...we mostly wild camp as we like to be as far away from other folks as possible .....and only use certain sites where we can choose a corner well away from others or small CS sites ..

All horses for courses though BUT some of our best times away have been tucked away in deserted spots,we have even found spots that were already occupied and afforded others the same chance at some solitude by moving on and searching the map onwards

Horses for courses! I like that. Motorhomes v caravans stealth vans v motorhomes a backpack v a van. Each to their own. I personally can't see the appeal of motorhomes and all that stuff: fridges, ovens, satellite dishes and being so obvious if wilding but I wouldn't want to be in a tent either!
