Motorhome or Motor Caravan?

Because of the distinct lack of activity on the forum since the split I've been looking at other groups on FB and am amazed that the majority of owners treat the van like a caravan, driving from home to a site and parking up. I can't help thinking this gives them the worst of both worlds. They land on a site in the middle of no where without the benefit of a towcar to get around. They have shown a need for vans that are too big to comfortably take into town with enough electrical gadgets to make them unusable without EHU. They don't need decent water supplies so have tanks the size of a domestic toilet cistern and toilet cassettes the size of the pisspot my granny kept under her bed. I can't help thinking they've lost sight of the beauty of touring and now want what the DVLA call a motor caravan.

If all I was doing was going back and forth too a U.K. holiday site a caravan. Not sure on the prices at the moment, but I’d maybe hire a large caravan, I’m thinking it would be cheaper overall and have more space.

If we were the same, life would be dull. [emoji106]

I like to park up somewhere, get the scooter out and explore. The freedom of not been on a site. That’s what I love about motorhomes.

i think it’s just quite on here because of the time of year lots of people either not using their vans or away in the costas, wish i could redefine mine it’s on the logbook as a motor caravan and unfortunately on the site where i live you are not allowed a caravan in the drive though there’s room on my plot for more than a dozen, might try and do the reverse of the self builders take the gas bottles out and the fixed table/ bed etc and reregister as a minibus,

Mee too :drive::drive::drive::cool::cool::cool:

Fourty something years of being a caravaner and now a motorhomer for 7 years.

Originally we got the caravan because we couldn't afford to holiday any other way.
When the kids were small we did a lot of centre rallies which were usually close to home and cheap.
The kids loved it because there was usually a social on Saturday nights and in those days kids were not allowed in most pubs.

As the kids got older we started visiting places and doing things that were more applicable, and which they still talk about today.

When the kids became young adults living at home we needed a bolt hole so we went for seasonal pitches.
For a while we kept a ski boat on Windermere and siting the van meant we didn't need to take two tow cars.
Then a site in Yorkshire which we could get to in under an hour from work on Friday afternoon (less if we used the motorbike).

As retirement loomed we changed to a Motorhome so we could do some touring and see more places.
In Europe we take a motorbike and tend to stay for a week or two in some places getting to know them a bit better.
In England we make the most of our bus passes when we are staying for a few days.

We use CL/CS sites; Commercial & Club sites; Pub (and supermarket) car parks ; friend's drives and Wild sites.

The beauty of the Motorhome is the choice it offers ,

In school holidays we often take our Grandson with us and are thinking that he may be ready to try a few rallies.

Ah the circle of life.

I think the beauty of a motorhome is that you can use it like a caravan if you want, put an awning up and stop for long periods on a campsite.Whereas a caravan can't be used like a motorhome. We were tuggers for 20 years and had some great holidays when the kids were small, now with 12 years of motorhome ownership we are on our own most of the time,(occasionally the granddaughter comes with us)we prefer the freedom and easier touring of a motorhome.I can't see us ever going back to a caravan but you never know if circumstances change.

I do the same when I have the generator running. Boil the kettle on the stove. lol.

We towed a caravan once...to Portugal and it is now parked and used as spare bedroom! The beauty of the motorhome for us is that it is versatile. On a touring trip we can wildcamp, on a longer trip ( or just need a shower/ laundry or EHU ) we can stay in a site. In fact so far, we have only stayed on sites a handful of times, but it was nice to put the awning up and settle for a few days. Also in winter we have preferred to have hookup to supplement heating etc....no solar panels or genny. I hate "wild camping" where there are more than one other vehicle....just our preference, but if a poi is full we go elsewhere. But each trip brings different needs and places so we are as versatile as the van. When we get our new van it won't be possible to stealth camp as it is obviously a motorhome, so that may change our habits too! Variety is the spice of life!

Pretty much the same here ...we mostly wild camp as we like to be as far away from other folks as possible .....and only use certain sites where we can choose a corner well away from others or small CS sites ..

All horses for courses though BUT some of our best times away have been tucked away in deserted spots,we have even found spots that were already occupied and afforded others the same chance at some solitude by moving on and searching the map onwards

I’m sorry but I think there’s still a fair bit of activity and advice on wild camping even since Motorhomer .com started you must remember over the festive season and also the weather can dictate posts ,only imho

Use ours like a motorhome when it’s me and Lin, use it like a caravan if we have grandchildren with us, ie on a site with safe play areas and other children.

Let's hope you're right, because it is pretty mundane at the moment.

Along similar lines, when it's gf and myself we mostly tour only occasionally staying somewhere for up to a week, when it's the 'family holiday' the van becomes the base on site and rarely moves.
