I'd suggest doing what they do when concealing a screw fixing in oak cabinetry.
Drill hole and glue in a peg cut across the grain, keep the grain orientation correct. When sanded and sealed it makes a really professional job.
Even when they get it wrong it still doesn't look terrible.
