motorhome insurance

Hello,
we have never had to purchase motorhome insurance before, soon to become full timers (over 50) travelling europe......and recommendations........

Hi there,

Safeguard for us. 365 days euro cover & breakdown and they're happy with the van parked on the street rather than on a drive or secure parking when we are in the UK.

:have fun::have fun:For me IMO there is no one particular company best, every year I pick 3 or 4 numbers to call including my existing one... Then make the decision, last years company not so good so went with an other...

I do the same with my motorbikes... One year Carole Nash, next ebike, next Swindon, but with bikes or cars I get a meerkat!

So the simples answer is get 3 numbers and go for it...:have fun:

Another one with Comfort insurance. They have a lot of wriggle clauses but I find that is common with them all.As long as they pay out for a major claim and if I break down arrange someone to recover me in Europe then I'm happy.

edit:For the information of the OP I think that Comfort are the only one that will cover full timers.

Safeguard last year, Comfort this year for us as they were quite a bit cheaper - it will probably be reversed again next year.

Insurance

Was recommend to try AIB, caravan club, etc found safeguard to be the cheapest for me, but everyone is different, they may not be the best for what you want, if I did not want overseas insurance and breakdown cover, the caravan club would have been cheapest for me driving in the uk only. As said previously shop around for the best quote, and be pre paired to jump ship and insure with someone else next year it the way companies tend to work, tempt you year one and then bump it up a good few quid the following year.
AIB were the most expensive quote for me even although, I am a wild camping member, 20 years without as much as a speeding ticket, full no claims which was transferable as it was built up from scratch on my previous campervan, securely parked, in highly rated postcode area, over 55 years old, they were about £380 which was £40 more than the next most expensive quote.

It is not just a question of cheapness, as some seem to imply. For example, does the EU cover extend for the length of time you need? Is the EU cover the basic third party insurance or is it fully comprehensive? Does it include breakdown recovery and repatriation? We spend most of the year in our motorhome and at least half of that time in mainland Europe. For us, no-one can compete with Safeguard. We have been with them for nearly 20 years and are not considering changing. Their cover is all I could want and their prices very competitive.

Interesting that,I always advocate ringing around at renewal time to get a better price for comparable insurance cover. It usually works for the car insurance but for some reason I can't better the motorhome insurance which is why I've been with Comfort for several years.

Wouldn't argue with ringing around but the answer you get depends on your circumstances, where you live and the exact nature of the cover you need and want. For example, I note that Comfort say on their website that, despite calling it 365 cover, they limit their EU insurance to 9 months in any one year - not the 12 months that Safeguard provide.

Comfort will give anyone a quote for 365 day EU insurance cover but it is more expensive and is classed as fulltiming.I believe they are the only company to offer this cover for genuine fulltimers that live in their vehicle and don't have a UK address.

We are with safeguard but be very aware that if you are over 3500 kg the breakdown cover changes significantly especially when abroad.

Do you mean 'significant changes' to the extent that you don't actually have ANY meaningful cover?

thank you all for your replies.
3 companies seem to be popping up regularly, so we will be trying them first.
thanx

We are Full timing using AVIVA through Comfort. Age 72 and vehicle is 1992, 4600kg MGVW and 7.2m We have no UK residence just a contact address (family member) where the Vehicle and other documents are registered to. This is not cheap insurance so expect to pay double or triple the amount they would quote for a standard policy.

This applies to standard motorhome cover not the Full timing Policy. If you use the motorhome for more than 9 months a year see below.

The Terms are
Long term Touring and Full Timing
Use of your motor caravan for nine months or more (whether as a single trip or a series of trips) in any one
year will be treated (and rated) as long-term touring. If, in addition, you sell or let your UK property you will
be treated (and rated) as full-timing. Please refer to the policy conditions on Page 29 for more details.

Long Term Touring & Full Timing
14. This policy is subject to the following conditions:
Policyholders must maintain a full UK residence, either through ownership or long term rental
agreement (of at least 9 months) unless a full-timing rate has been agreed and paid.
The address shown on the policy schedule must be the one at which the policyholder is on the electoral
roll, (unless a full-timing rate has been agreed and paid) and also the one that appears on the driving
licence and vehicle documentation.
Your motor caravan must at all times have a valid MOT certificate (unless not required due to age of
the vehicle) and current UK Road Fund Licence.
Should a copy of a utility bill (as evidence of residence at the address) be requested at any time
(inception, mid-term, renewal, in the event of a claim) then one must be provided.

There is no trip limit to Full Timing insurance other than you are limited to 180 days in any one country other than the UK

Continental use
In compliance with EU Directives this policy
provides, as a minimum, the necessary cover to
comply with the laws on compulsory insurance of
motor vehicles in:
● any country which is a member of the
European Union
● any country which the Commission of the
European Communities is satisfied has made
arrangements to meet the requirements of
Article 7(2) of EC Directive 72/166/EEC relating
to civil liabilities arising from the use of a motor
vehicle.
In addition to the minimum cover, full cover as
described by your policy applies in all countries as
defined in the territorial limits provided:
● your motor caravan is kept in Great Britain,
Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the
Isle of Man
● use of your motor caravan for visits to
countries outside Great Britain, Northern
Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man
is not of a permanent nature
● your motor caravan remains in your custody
or control. If for any reason your motor
caravan will not be within your custody or
control for a period in excess of 36 hours,
then you must notify Comfort Insurance in
advance. Please refer to Section I of this policy
for information on security of stored vehicles.
● All countries within the territorial limits have
agreed that a Green Card is not necessary. For
travel outside the territorial limits a single trip
limit of 120 days applies and Green Card cover
is required.
Cover includes:
● transit by sea, air or rail in or between countries
within the territorial limits

I also checked with the CC and despite them saying they did fulltime cover they had a trip limit of 90 days. This would indicate that you had to maintain a UK residence to return to between trips.

SAGA do 365 days cover but you must maintain a UK residence and be on the Electoral roll at that address.
