Hi All

I know there are a few bikers on here thanks to the extremely amusing Bikers with MH Thread so-

Our his and hers helmets for our trusty scooter need replacing. We bought the bike second hand from a lovely old couple who had a motorhome and the helmets came with it. They are open face helmets with no manufacturers name on. Called a couple of bike shops no joy and have been on to The Visor Shop - and although they have tried to help they cant find them either. Anyone got any suggestions?

Buy new helmets, you don't know the history of yours, which could let you down in a crisis. At least with new ones you can match visors to them.

If you take the visor off the helmet you may find a makers name and / or model number on it somewhere, there should also be a BSI kitemark symbol on it as well.

Being an ex biker ( Bandit 1200 ), it looks to me like either an AGV or Boeri open face model. You will probably find the visor is used on a variety of different helmet makes. :)

Hi Barry
EXE helmets are made from polycarbonate and as such will need replacing if they're more than (i think) three years-old.
I know that you should replace fibreglass after five years max.
Personally i'd bin-em and buy new fibreglass ones.
Polycarbonate helmets are the bargain basement end of the market and offer such low levels of protection that you cannot use them on race tracks.

bin that sheeeeet you have asap and if you can afford it go to a full face or even a crackjaw (i wear glasses so a crackjaw is betterer for me)
much safer than these silly things:eek:

lastly... ensure it has a kite mark..and an E11 sticker
if it hasn't its illegal:eek:

Motorcycle helmets, visors and goggles - useful information

go for a reputable name... ari, showi, agv, caberg, etc etc.. not some obscure brand from china:eek:

My 1968 helmet and flying goggles will see me out! I never wanted one in the first place, I prefer the wind in my hair.

Anyway my 1939 Norton doesn't go that fast.

Why don't cyclists have to wear a helmet by law? What about horse riders?
And worst of all quad bike riders don't have to wear a helmet.

I did think of converting to Sikhism, I would then be allowed to wear just a turban, but I felt I could not live up to the ideals of that faith, particularly "to be honest and work hard"

Everybody must be like that from Worcester then?

We all used to be honest and hardworking but since the government allowed so many manufacturers (including Rover Group) to go to the wall we now all have to depend on benefits and thieve and lie. It's a hard life.

Im not spending hundreds of squids of Mrs D's not so hard earned cash on a state of the art Helmet! It wasnt so long ago that I remember tear arsing around the Greek islands on a 600cc enduro in just shorts and a T Shirt and a Union Flag bandana! I have slightly more sense these days and put the helmet on if I remember but there is still a bit of resentment of having to conform every time I put it on. I know it makes sense but there is something liberating about driving down a country lane or along side a mediteranian beach with the wind in your hair. Nowt wrong with our piss pot helmets and if I cant get a visor ill just wear shades!

All depends on where you intend to use your bike I suppose. It may be ok in other countries but here, as you know, its a legal requirement.

You may well find the price of a visor if you can find one is equal to, or more than, the cost of a halfway decent lid.

There are loads of reasonably priced helmets on the market these days, and if you only use your bike occasionally then polycarbonate ones are perfectly adequate, just change them every five years or so.

As has already been said, buy new, at least then you know the history of your helmets.

When I used to do bike rallies we used to play skittles with helmets for balls and beer bottles for pins!!!! :D

I know, I had a look and some visors were £40!!!!! I thought they would be like a fiver tops! Its only a bit of perspex. Perhaps I could nock one together? Dont know how they justify that sort of money.

Looking at your fizzog, I thought you had come off yours plenty of times without your lid.

I lost faith in crash helmets in the early 70's when the British Standard for crash helmets was downgraded to allow cheap Italian imports to compete in the British market. Yet another example of the British Government selling the country down the river.

I agree mate, Love my bikes and as you say skidded down the road a couple of times on bits and bobs not designed for the trip.

I would never ever allow a pillion on the bike minus gloves, legs and arms covered.

permanent reminder is gravel rash

Yes your all right. You should be protected. However, when we were away in Europe in the summer we did wear helmets all the time (except once when I forgot in Normandy) but we nearly always went out in shorts and T shirts. If you imgagine a lot of the time it was 30c plus. We came close a couple of times to coming off but I guess we were lucky. I know its silly and one dropped bike at even just 30 mph would probably have meant curtains for the entire trip. I remember once coming off in Turkey a few years ago just turning the bike around at about 5 mph and we were badly grazed. I wasnt that fussed but what really annoyed me is that we were outside a bar and there were loads of English tourists just stood there staring while Mrs D and I laid in the road! I wasnt bothered about meself but you think one of the ignorant louts might have helped Mrs D to her feet!

We will be using the bike over the Christmas period on the Isle of Wight and south coast but will be more suitably attired!

Cheers
