Coming up for 3 years of ownership so first MOT required.

Trying to work out of its class 4 or 7 or another and Googling is confusing me as seems to be no definitive answer.

Please would those who have a motorhome in the MOTOR CARAVAN PRIVATE HGV (ie over 3.5T) category please provide a definitive answer.

This link for first MOTs for vehicles over 3.5T is confusing me. I do not know if it’s relevant or not and total test costs of around £250 are required if it is relevant:-

Class 4 my vans 5 ton just done mot on Saturday. The garage needs a ramp and able to take the size and weight I use a commercial garage that dose council trucks and bin lorries.

Should be class 4 if its a campervan/motorhome ...

Looks like a camper/motorhome
Smells like a campervan/motorhome
Sounds like a campervan/motorhome

Then it's tested as a campervan/motorhome (providing you can a garage doing class 4 testing that has equipment capable of handling the weight )

"Tested as presented" is the critical phrase ...

There was a glitch a while back with vehicles with garages being 'capable of carrying goods'
BUT that's largely been sorted now AFAIK .

Class 4 as has been stated - and would confirm from my own experience.

As an FYI, Class 7 is a Red Herring ... that is for commericials between 3.0t and 3.5t, so wouldn't apply in any way or form.
If you DID try and get an HGV MOT, you would also find that almost certainly impossible as you won't have an HGV plate so cannot be tested by VOSA.

end of the day ... Class 4 MOT. Probably need to go to a station that deals with larger vehicles purely due to the physical weight and size of the Motorhome. Cost is the standard Class 4 MOT charge at the most. many stations discount (I pay £40 for my MOTs on >3.5t vans)

The only problem we had was getting somewhere with heavy duty ramps

Just phoned a Swift dealer and they said Class 7 so totally baffled. They said they can’t do Class 7 and referred me to a local MOT station that can.

To be honest ....
I wouldn't trust the average main 'Stealer' to be truthful about what day of the week it is ....
Let alone the product they are selling .

Here in Ulster is just tested as a motorcaravan in the car class, only extra thing they do is an exhaust smoke test.

Phoned the local test station CVT Vehicle Services MOT Centre and they said they have the equipment for larger motorhomes and it is class 4. They test the large American motorhomes and still do a Class 4 test.

They did say there is a lot of confusion about motorhomes and testing requirements as they are not commercial vehicles. They also said they get a lot of referrals from the local Swift dealer as the dealer does not have the heavy equipment needed for larger motorhomes.

Disappointed that the Swift dealer simply did not say that rather than claiming Class 7.

It’s a weird one needs a garage capable of doing a class 7 but your mot on a motorhome is a class 4

very different in GB.
In NI, think you have said to get a MH tested as a Class 4, needs to be a "Motor Caravan" on the Log Book? in GB the log book is totally - and specifically - ignored when doing MOTs and it is all down to how the vehicle is presented (which actually makes more sense IMO).

Hi ya,
My last Motorhome (The Nest) was 5000kg Tag axle & on a PHGV Tax class, it always went through on a class 4 MOT,
But in fairness just book it into the garage, send them the details & they will tell you what the correct class will be required 👍

I‘m not going to say class 4 because by now you know it is.

The issue will be you’ll need to find a class 7 mot centre that does class 4, it should be easy enough but depending where you are it may not be.

why is there an assumption that to get a class 4 MOT on a HGV motorhome, you need a class 7 capable station? Class 7 only goes up to 3.5t.
So if they have a lift that has a SWL of 3.5t, yes, it would be ok for class 7, but no use for an heavy MH over 3.5t

Simple Class 4 AND a MOTer that takes the vehicle size and Weight.
I always go to car garage, 4.05 tonne, that's got a big ramp and high roof!

It's not just the SWL some ramps with 3.5 swl still aren't long enough or wide enough to test some MH's

I have been told by both the ministry tester that came to test the lorry as a HGV (over 3.5t) and regular mot testers you can choose whichever you like.

The first year I did a HGV test (because i didn't know), then the motorhome test (4) in subsequent years after he told me I could.
