MOT.... That dreaded day!!!

my diesel van is 1993 and sailed through on emissions... or are older diesel vehicles not included in the new emissions regs for MOT this year?

Mine is a 2002 diesel and the rest haven't changed for mine so you are OK,

Retest

Ours is in being repaired now. It had been for a test and failed then after the garage did the "alleged " repairs it came back in a worse state than it started.

Our 21 year old diesel van passed a couple of weeks ago. It looks like they may have changed the emissions limit for older vans with the new mot regulations. Last mot shows the limit as 1.5m now it is 1.8m, luckily, our van passed with a reading of 0.24m

hi
what they do now for the smoke test is go by the number that is printed
on the vin plate. on the bottom right hand corner there should be a number
in a square box. that is the manufacturer limit which can be lower than the
old EU limit. so can be more difficult to pass.

Yeah...with mine they had to tweak it so it was virtually undriveable to pass emissions and then adjust it back after the test... They have suggested changing the carb to help emissions next year... .may also improve pulling power a little on hills...
The main thing is I have my van back now. Pocket a lot lighter but we get to go to scotland next weekend so all is good.

What you do is set the eng timing 2 or 3 deg advanced the fine the carb out till almost ghosting, set it all back when home.
Advancing the timing gives a better cleaner burn at tickover as all the mixture gets burnt,15 years i got away with it with my car converted to carb points from the makers fuel inj crap sys which always failed and lacked power.

Lob a bottle of cleaning fluid in the tank before you go on ya jollies and let it clean itself along the highway to holidays simples :) :)

I have seen the mot testers just do the diesel smoke test with the engine just ticking over.

I have also seen them revving the nuts off the diesel.

I have seen mot passes without the car going on the brake testing rollers.

I can remember the tester apologizing to the workshop service manager that he could not find anything to fail the car on.

And this was ALL on my OWN CARS.

I can't recall the details but there are some 4WD cars that cannot be tested with the standard rollers and have some other decice used to check brakes (possibly on a road test?).

hi
any vehicle after 1980 has the smoke meter test. up to 2008 it is 3.o or what is on the
vin plate. for turbo. after 2008 to 2013 it is 1.5 or what is on the vin plate. after 2013
it is 0.7 or what is on the vin plate. if its fitted with a DPF there should also be no
visible smoke.
