MOT inaccuracy

I have been working through the paperwork for my new (to me) motorhome and I have come across a .

My MOT shows my odometer reading as 64,000 miles. Well, this is a European model, with speedo and odo in kilometres. Even the last MOT failure showed 64,000 kilometres and the pass certificate shows 64,000 miles.

I am outside the period in which to challenge the MOT.

The MOT is a legal document and needs to be right (hah!)...so what do I do about it?

I dont think it is a challenge re the Mot more a simple administrative error ...perhaps call the station who tested it explain the km: ything and see what they can do if only to issue a letter that states the odometer reading was 64 k and they assumed miles not Kms

hi, do nothing .nobody cares . the important bit is really that it shows some kind of uk mph speed reading on the speedo. the km/ml will be corrected next mot.
you could have had a speedo change or a broken cable .
i had a new tacho the other year they actually set it to the old km reading (tacho,s are in km but dual speed reading dial.)
its easily explained to anyone.
after all is the mot certificate a legal doc . it doesnt show that the vehicle is road worth only at the time of test. really its got no perpose in life at all anymore. its only a reciept for payment . the computers today let you get tax and the police know if its mot,d before they ask.
thousands of vehicles dont need them and i dont mean new vehicles .

After the seven day period the only way to change the recorded mileage is to contact your nearest Vehicle Registration Office. Alternatively, you could just forget it and when the vehicle is MOTd next year make sure the mileage recorded then is correct. There is an outside chance, though, that leaving it could cause a problem if, for example, you wanted to sell the vehicle and the odd pattern of mileage in the records at VOSA suggested that the vehicle might have been clocked.

Alan says the MOT certificate has no purpose but it is a legal requirement and the fact that the police et al already know whether your vehicle is MOTd without asking for it is beside the point. The information that the police have access to is the information that is on the certificate you hold, so any mistake on that certificate (and therefore in the VOSA database) could in extreme circumstances invalidate your insurance (an extremely unlikely outcome but nonetheless a real one).

I had the same problem when I first arrived in the UK, they wrote miles instead of KMs. I just left it and the following year made sure it was entered as KMs. Fortunately I have a button for both Kms and miles. I have it also on my car. It shows both the readings, but only for the total mileage or Kms. My speedometer also shows both the readings. (miles & Kms)

but you are allowed to replace speedo,s with out getting a new mot .
if you are selling anyone will beable to see the mistake made . even if you want to sell now or years to come.
thenew certificates are nothing like the old ones just a computer print on plain paper.
nobody isreally bothered about the milage . even a insurer would be resonable , you could tell the insurers now if you wanted .
lets be reasonable the milage as no value it changes all the time .

I have a print of the MOT history...it works to my advantage that there was a failed MOT at 64000 km and a pass at 64000 miles on the same day, but I take your point. The history reads an arbitrary mix of metric and imperial.

@Alan - which begs the question: what is the point of having the information recorded on a legal document? It is like forms asking if you are male or female...most of the time it doesn't matter, so why ask?

I once filled in an application form for a receptionist position...wanted to know my height! It didn't specify whether what was with heels or knot.

polly . you know very well i have units to pull my trailer that havent been mot,d for 11 years .the newer one 5 yrs . i cant really see the mot being anything than a money making machine or wasting machine .
unfortunately i do have to mot my bikes but i miss them loads of years and rest the bikes . still use them but not on the roads. the idea now is the plain mot ,s they give are really only reciepts . we dont have to carry or produce them on request. (in uk). tax can be got with out showing them . dont even need to show ins cert to get it either. like i say its possible some vehicles could have several speedo heads in one year or at least a life time. just another authority joke i think . leaves room for many court issues to be brought out in to the open. but as it is authority cant keep up with its own moves forward . they just get more inefficiant all the time. shout loud but dont actually do anything is their motto . (my view).

Sorry John I strongly disagree, If the Mot centre has recorded using imperial miles as opposed to Kilometres which appears obvious I really see no insurance issue.

Anything which can influence an insurer to accept risk and which isnt declared can influence the outcome of a claim.

The Op hasnt and has no need to declare anything that would influence risk for example a modification adaptation from standard.

I really cant see, any reason in Polliks post why an insurer would argue in the event of a claim.

It may be of interest I hold a city and guilds from my motor trade days in General insurance, and from the situation I can see no reason why a claim would be rejected on the mistake Pollik has disclosed.

hi polly . i like your style , bit like me could be sttood up or sitting down . standing straight up or bent down. its just form frightning.
you can have difficulty with the question . name . what your or mine , the name on my birth certoificate or what i am called. it goes on . another court game . birth certificate is me ,i only represent my birth certificate . but thats another story . you can find pages of it on the web. makes courts worth nothing if you dont recognise them. and we dont have to. not in uk.
i think the revolution as been going on for years its just that 80%of the folk on the planet are blind to it.follow rules like sheep. and deserve the life they get doled out to them . keep smiling ,dont cause too much trouble hee hee.

I did say that it was a minimal risk but, as you must be aware, insurance companies are very good at searching out discrepancies that get them out of paying up in the event of a claim. It is up to each individual to assess whether the risk is worth taking but there is a risk, however small you assess it as being.

This is an argument that has been tried by many people - including Sadam Hussein and Milosovic. It may make you feel better but it is no good shouting it as they cart you off to the cells.
