MoT’s

No Trev, I tried telling them the first time but they wouldn't listen, so I just took it back after making it look as if I had changed them, then I dropped in to the garage after a long run and asked if they could fit me in, he put it straight on the ramps and five minutes later said it had passed, I had to bite my tongue to avoid telling him that I hadn't changed it.
Retests are free here if done within two weeks and this garage is excellent to deal with so I didn't want to rock the boat
£35 here for retest, nealy all fail first time through, even a bulb out is a fail.

For a few years our Sprinter had a Mot advisory of slight play in both front ball joints, then it failed an Mot on excessive play in them, even though it had only done 48,000 miles. I showed them the bulletin about how not to test them, the manager and Mot tester discussed it for a fair while but concluded that the play was still excessive. Our MH had previously developed a slight weave above 60mph so I went ahead and let them replace both ball joints for a fixed price of about £280 using genuine MB parts which were actually cheaper than pattern. The job took them much longer than expected and our MH now drives steady as a rock at any speed, so it was well worth it.
£280, feck time i opened up for biz again. ;)

£35 for a retest?

Well, Mr Skoda, far from 'nout in it for them', straightaway there is an reason for NI centres failing on anything at all.
If you had a bulb out on an MOT at a GB Station, the tester will typically fail the vehicle (as they should), change the bulb and then immediately pass the vehicle with no retest charge and often won't even charge for the bulb replacement if it is a simple swap.

Yes handy that, but if it was like that here it would be run by paramilterys and every veh in there zone would pass, i used to know a chap and £50 in a brown envelope sorted a pass as long as it was 90% ok and no realy bad points. ;)

There is always a dodgy garage around. Where I grew up there was a renowned garage and when I needed a car for a few weeks while my own was being repaired after an accident, I bought an Renault 12 MOT Failure (broken seat frame) for maybe £50 or £100 quid; took to this place for "Repairs and MOT" and had a nice fresh MOT for another £50 :)

Many years ago when i had a ducato avantgarde 200 it failed every year on emissions the tester said put a bottle of FORTE in and give it a run round .It then passed ,turns out the tester was a tenor drummer in a pipe band. Luck or what.😁
