Monty Halls Great Escape 2

In a similar vein, the Countryfile series is currently asking viewers to tell them their favourite secret places in the British countryside. Derrr...

No Place to Spend Money

I can understand that they want to make as much money as they can from the tourists while they are on the islands but when we were there we could'nt find anywhere to spend our money! There don't appear to be any facilities geared up for tourists, ie :- cafes, restaraunts, gift shops etc. Although I admit we only visited the Uists and Berneray, ( we did'nt have time to do Harris and Lewis ).

I also know that the islands councils are trying to restrict the perceived damage that is being done by motorhomers and campers to the machair areas and the bird and plant life on these areas.

You couldn't have been looking very hard!

And I presume you don't believe any damage is being caused by irresponsible campers and motorhomers.

As I said in my previous post, we only visited the Uists and Berneray. I believe that Harris and Lewis have more facilities for tourists and I believe that there are plans for more campsites and facilities in the near future.

There are irresponsible campers and motorhomers wherever you go, and I know that the beach and machair areas on the western isles are important habitats for bird and insect life. I understand that they need to protect these areas but my perception of the situation for 2010 from the posts on here is that they intend to severely restrict camping areas and possibly charge for overnight parking, with no benefit other than the ground where you are parked.

If you, or anyone else, has any up to date information then please share it as we would love to visit the western isles again but we need to know what we're going to find when we get there.

When i started this thread i didnt expect

SUCH NEGATIVITY.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

However mostly what I read is based on speculation rather than fact.

It seems to me theIslanders are trying to premote tourism , And that has to Include Motorhomes as I would imajine it is difficult to visit
and tour the Islands without one. (maybe worth finding out howmany M/H's Visit there each year), you may be shocked., I saw plenty boading at UIG last year.

I intend going to the western islands this year , come rain or shine I will wild camp as I'm certain there are hundreds of places to stay "FREE" on the Islands overnight , just off the main tourist routes.( I know there is I have been on google street veiw and found loads of them), then just a short drive to a more scenic place / beach during the day.

I won't be damaging the local enviroment (by camping on the enviromentaly sensitive machair), so to me It will be a win win situation.(save the site fees , then spend them in the shops), that'll boost the economy there for a while.

I beleive the veiws of some on here maybe predjudice towards motorhomes , maybe they are disgruntled guest house owners.

STOP BEING SO NEGATIVE - go there and ENJOY IT!!!!

Oh any chance of getting back on topic "THE TV PROGRAMME"

Monty Hall great escape Hebridean adventure 9.00pm Wednesdays BBC2. - What do people think????

if you really want cafe's/ souveniers and all the cheap crap like cards and toys and rock. then come to blackpool you even get a bottle throw at you for free. so come on down....................... also must mention blackpool council charge about 3.50 for a hour parking. i know where i would rather be.. so stop moaning and enjoy thread and programme where its free........................................................

Pity the locals can often be blind to their own junk (note my address!!). Crofts littered with decaying sheds and rotting cars, plastic bag and heaps of old tyres...it's often the difference in attitude to m/h owners between the "traditional" inhabitants and the incomers and absentee crofters.
Around my own area I have never known a real local who has been difficult...we've even invited m/h people parking near us to weddings and a grand do known as a reitach.
The only troublemaker, now moved away, was a Yorkshire family who spoke of "us" and "them" depending on your accent and who regularly got their solicitors to write complaining of the noise of sheep, cattle and agricultural vehicles.

RANDONNEUR - I hope you have a great time up the west coast , I'am sure you will !

Are you going over bealach na ba ;) to applecross , If so Enjoy !! the veiws are amazing (Unless its raining).

Above all Have a Fantastic chilled time !!

Sagart .

I agree totaly , with what you are saying as regards genuine residents and Incommers.

We have never had a problem with true "Locals" the opposite in fact. They are some of the most hospitable people We have ever met, which is why we love the highlands so much.
We have friends on Skye , at Idrigill (Uig), and have spent many days in the community.

If anything they encourage us to stay - There have been days they have tried to persuade us to move there --SO TEMPTING. ;)

As regards old sheds and agracultural junk , It adds Character .. Unless you are an English Landowner , Then its an Eyesore because It can reduce the value of your land.

The only time we have had problems is from selfish, Ignorant and rude "English Landowners" who have more money than Brains, This makes me embarrased to be English , sometimes ! Point Proven , If you dont want the noise of sheep and cattle DONT live near a farm !! TYPICAL

However my Grandparents were True scots, So I have it in my Blood "somewhere"..!!

Either Way I am/will be a Visitor and as such Would treat the People and their Property / Surrounding with the Upmost respect . I hope other visitors will do the same !!!
