Hi
I'm an IT Manager for a large corporation. We have several users that use Vodaphone dongles in europe. The one thing to be careful about is that you connect to an approved network. If you acidently connect to an unapproved one Vodaphone will charge you an arm and a leg. The same applys to all providers. Go to their websites and check which network they want you to use in each country.
Whenever possible use a hotspot or similar. If you need to spend a couple of hours on line it can even be cheaper to spend 1 night on a campsite and use their wireless connection.
Me I also ensure I can connect my mobile phone to my laptop. It might be a slow connection but it will allow me to do the basics like email.
