Would be intresting to know where you have used the service, I had a 3g dongle for my laptop 18months back, the coverage was very poor where i wanted to use it in Cornwall & Scotland. Switched to vodafone instead.
I must add tho when it did on rare occasions work it was faster than vodafone.
 
Dont get T mobile.

I got a T mobile dongle and free Laptop the laptop is fine but the 3G signal is piss poor, So far Blackpool is the only place i got a 3G signal, I have been all over from Devon to scotland, I live in Blackburn and the signal is weak, Tied into a 2 year contract, Small print says they cant be responsible for Signal strengths, Just so you all know, make your own minds up though.:eek::eek:
 
3 dongle

Being a of a 3 mobile phone fan, we have been disapointed in the 3 dongle which never seems to work in most areas where we travel!

South/South East Coast to Dorset area, travelling up to the Midlands, this includes in big city's!
 
3 Store - Mobile Broadband

Put your town in the coverage box and check. Anywhere which is not solid purple is dodgy. For example we went to the Forest of Dean and it was crap, but the Forest of Dean is white on the map so that figures.

I find the map is accurate. Any purple area along motorways or big towns the signal is good. But 91% coverage in their advert means 91% of the population not 91% of the area. And since a lot of the time we camp over in more remote areas you can see why a bad impression can be perceived.
 
seems ok for us but then again coverage is a bit iffy in the brecons. only thing is any mobile broad band runs on the 3g signal so to me whatever network you are on all runs off the same transmitters ????? i am shuure someone will put me correct if i am wrong .in merther where we are at the moment we have little coverage 1 or 2 bars in the signal gauge but all seems ok

Some networks piggy back of others. For example I think Virgin uses One to One masts, but most companies have their own network of masts which explains the difference in coverage between them. I guess in remote areas they may want to share as it's not economical to put up masts to serve only few people.
 
we have two

t-mobile good coverage but not fast

"3" fast good connection but poor coverage.

carry both for best of both worlds

found vodaphone too expensive compared to all the others on pay as you go.

dongle vodaphone

We have 3G VODAPHONE,just bought it,it's a dongle thingy that plugs into back of laptop,i think £20 and then 'top ups' like paying for your mobile phone...easy.
Working on my laptop a treat,seems fast although it said signal poor.......
In S.Wales at the moment but 'they' assured me that we can use this through EUROPE and we know it will work in Bulgaria as we had similar last year.
 
I had voda phone and tried it in five places and never got 3 g so I live in harwich and still did not get 3 g but I noticed that three.co.uk did have 3g so went and brought it in argos and got a fast conection at home better then bt. you can check on three.co.uk site to make sure ware you are going that you can get a signal

go to three site and check the coverage for where you want to go
I have found it to be the best I have ever had and I have been on computers since 1995.
 
'3' was rubbish for me

'3' was rubbish for me in SW SE & Midlands. In fact anywhere away from town centres or under a telecoms mast.

Now have BT Dongle that came free with home broadband and I have never had bad coverage in these areas yet.

Also free usage in lots BT hot spots

PS Now there's a thing - never thought I would be complimenting BT!
 
interesting......presumably the BT hotspots you refer to are the ones available under the agreement with FON ......does this mean it works with 3G or wifi???

will the BT dongle work in spain?
 
Happy with our O2 dongle in the UK BUT have just bought an M6 Orange one here in France and it is trash. It does bring in 3G but is a bugger to get it bringing down web pages. PLUS it is very expensive to what we are used to in the UK. Cost 59€ for the dongle and is 8€ an hour usage :eek:
 
I have a 3 dongle and travel extensively and find that it works ok in most places. I went to France last week and had no signal at all , but I confess I didnt have the sense to contact 3 before I went to see if I had to change settings , but that apart I am well satisfied with it .

There is an article in this months Practical Motorhome on mobile broadband. Some of the prices are steep. Like you, my best option will be PAYG.
 
A mate loaned me a Vodaphone radio card to plug into the PCMCIA slot on my lappie and it saved our lives in France. We thought we had blown a head gasket and I used the internet to locate a new one, book the ferry back to Dover to collect it, and then book a man with a lorry to collect us and take us home when it turned out to be a broken piston and a cracked liner. Mobile internet? I love it!!!
 
The system can be good value in this country but we tend to spend a lot of time on the continent and have been advised not to use it by every store I have enquired in. The reason is that European roaming charges (even after the reductions) make it much more expensive than simply using internet cafes (or free hotspots). maybe one day.............
