Hello, we are planning on going to Europe in the next couple of months and wanted some ideas on the most cost effective way to get mobile internet while we are away.......any suggestions would be gratefully received as I am so confused (not difficult) we are going to Portugal, Spain then see where that takes us.

I'm with 3 on contract, get the contract 28 days before you go you can use your phone abroad as you would here inc data, not allowed to tether tho.
Most places in France I had 3G and was never without a signal.
Had txt from 3 when I got back saying id saved £31
In 2 weeks.

Three do a data SIM loaded with 12Gb which lasts for up to 12 months from when you first use it in a device and costs £30.

As from this month (September 2016) it can be used in the following countries:

Austria, Belgium,Bulgaria, Channel Islands (Jersey & Guernsey), Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

Another vote for Three. The contract I'm in allows for two months abroad per year. Just back from France and it worked perfectly. I am investing in an external antenna though as sometimes the signal can be a little poor in remote areas.

The three 12gb 12 month sim works well for us.We don't manage to use the full 12gb in 12months so good value at £30

I am researching this myself at the moment.

It really depends what type of service you want, how much internet you need and how long you are going away for.

For basic browsing and emails then the Three 12gig deal is very good. The data is valid for twelve months, only two of which can be overseas. No chance of streaming anything with this unless you understand the technology a bit and are able to route through a VPN. I have a couple of these sims on the go all the time and it's my usual choice for internet provision.

If you sometimes need unlimited internet for a day then you can back this up with a Vodaphone payg sim, £3 a day for unlimited and fast internet where it is available, I italic that because Vodaphone apparently does not have as good a network as some others.

In Portugal there are some very good deals for unlimited internet on local sims, typically 15 Euro's for 15 Days. (Handy for streaming films when it's lashing down, as it often is!)

I haven't come up with the best answer for Spain yet but am told there are good local deals available on the ground. I'm off in 10 days time so may report back...

free internet in europe

just a reminder folks that completely free wi fi internet is available virtually everywhere in europe, for tablets etc at mc donalds restaurants, tourist info. centers, and local libraries...........steve bristol

Any idea if you can tether with the 3 PAYG 4G Trio Data SIM Pack Preloaded with 12GB of Data as opposed to the contract which from an earlier thread you cant.Sandy

Where can I get one of these? I've been searching for options for high data usage, but find it all very confusing. Can you use one of these in a mifi router?

Correct. Except I paid £22 for 12GB for 12 months on ebay.

Thanks very much for all the really helpful and useful advice I think the 3G card is a winner with some backup of Vodaphone £3 per day or a local data simcard. We are hoping to leave mid October so will be calling in for more advice (using my data card) no doubt. Thanks again everyone :cool:

I'm on three Pay as you go. Just as we leave the UK I buy a bundle which is £20 and get 12GB, 300mins and thousands of texts (other bundles are available). It lasts 1 month, then when back home it's cheap enough not to need to buy a bundle. I just take a 5" smart phone don't need a computer now.

I had mine in my tablet and rather than change it to the mifi (laziness) thought I'd make the tablet a "hotspot" whilst I did something on my phone - 3 knew immediately and wouldn't let me.

Thanks, I am off to Spain for a few months over winter and looking to buy a mifi and still trying to workout the most cost effective sim to buy.

Re the mifi - if you think you may ever want to use an antenna to boost the signal get a mifi unit that is able to be connected.
I didn't, but wish I had now.

No tethering allowed.

Just tried exactly that with 3 sim in iPhone and iPad tethered. As soon as tried to access internet on iPad following came up in browser:

"Are you using your phone as a Personal Hotspot?

Reference SIM009
We're sorry, but you're currently not allowed to use your phone as a Personal Hotspot while you're in a Feel At Home destination, even if your plan allows you to use your data in this way while in the UK, or you have an Add-on which gives you a Personal Hotspot allowance, as this is use in the UK only.

To be able to use the internet on your phone again, please make sure your Personal Hotspot switch is switched "off" and try turning your phone off and back on again."

It also knocked the 'phone off the Internet as described.

I use mine in a mifi.
It didn't work properly at first but a mifi reset sorted it no problem. I got my sim direct from the local three shop.
