I have a problem with fuse from the alternator to the leisure battery. It keeps blowing. I believe delicagirl has got the exact same model Mitsubishi . The one that keeps blowing is a 10A. Their are 4 fuses under the seat inside the main body. Mine are ( starting from the window) 10,10, 20 and 20A .

Delicagirl if you read this post, could you tell me, the ratings of your fuses.

hi the lovely roger alerted me to this... I will certainly look later on this morning for you - I recently put photos up of my van in photos on my profile... is it the same as yours ? There's not many of us about !! Every knob, button, dial and switch is beautifully labelled in my van - either in Japanese or german..... useful huh ? So if we are twins you may be able to help me also.....

Others a bit more information required here, I would have thought the fuse to be at least a 15A fuse, but when does it blow and is the leisure battery ok

hi I just had a look at the 4 glass fuses located under the seat to the right of the habitation door where the original leisure battery and all the wiring are located - none of the fuses have a number on them and all the labels as I said are in Japanese - so I am so sorry I cannot be of more help

David- thanks for that i did try to get one out but was scared of breaking it as I don't have any spares

Collette I just use the end of a small screwdriver under the metal end of the fuse perhaps for safety sake it would be better for you to use the pointed end of a plastic combe or such to lift one end out of the clip if you tell me . The fuse sizes I will send some spare ones.

As David said it would be better to change to the blade type these are cheap enough to buy and not a big job to replace

Managed to figure out the photo album section

Just managed to figure out the photo album section. Posted 2 photos. The two top ones are from the alternator, from there its on to a charge relay 70 amp. I believe this disconnects the leisure battery when the engine is stopped.

Thank you Alf for your comments

I assume its the next to the top fuse ( missing ) that is blowing this only looks a light cable possibly 1.5mm i would try a 15A fuse and if it blows a 20A if this blows seek advice the set up looks very professional if this has only started since you went solar and had the extra battery fitted i would go back to whoever fitted these.
I would be an easy job to change the fuse unit but be aware there are some very bad blade fuses on ebay buy these local.

Are the batteries sealed if not are they vented through the floor

That is a very familiar picture to my own arrangement...... ..... I also had a solar panel fitted and had 2 additional linked batteries fitted, but I had it fitted underneath the bench seat behind the drivers seat. I have never had any trouble with fuses, except when I had left the habitation heating fan on and it burn out through overuse.

how about a piccie of the van ?

Alf is right .. You need to look back to when it started and then work out what was done immediately before that. When does the fuse blow and what effect does it have once it's blown.

Electrical Gremlins can be a right faff to sort out .. The step on the MH refused to come out. It had been back and they had fitted a new switch so you would assume that it was the step that was giving problems. After consulting the wiring diagram and emailing Thule. I took the switch apart cleaned it with switch cleaner and reassembled it. Success .. Two days later I got a reply from Thule suggesting it maybe the new switch thats the problem. Ordered a new one and put it in the box of bits in case it's required.

So look for the obvious first and then totally irrational and you will probably work it out.

Another point worth considering is a wiring diagram. If you can find one on the internet great. If not then draw your own. Work out what all the wires do and where they go. May help trace the fault.

..

Alf in my ignorance here... if he were to multi-meter the leisure battery when the engine is stopped, and again when it is running, would that help us identify what is going on ?

thanks for the glass fuse removal kit... I will email you my address... you are so helpful..

I just bought the fuse removal kit... thank you

an auto electrician who looked at my fuses some while back did tell me what the 4 glass fuses were for - stupidly I didn't write it down.. but they were fuses for habitation equipment as I recall.

The alt should not be charging the les batt direct only the starter batt, then a relay which should be fused at switch side and its the relay that connects both batts together.
If thats wired like that from new it should be rewired to the normal way as its plain daft.

David I think the positive side is linked on the right hand side top to second 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. Bottom'and next to bottom.

The output side the left has wires from each fuse.

I had a nightmare time with my electrics till I found a really good auto electrician (sadly now retired). He spotted that to the extreme left of the storage box where your two batteries are in the photo, and on the outside of the box, was a mains trip switch which was somehow connected to the original Japanese 110 volt system. (I still have unusable two hole 110v sockets in the van.) This trip had been in the off position (all Japanese switches are the opposite to UK switches) when I thought it was on. As soon as I switched it on the fridge worked on electric rather than gas or EHU.

PLEASE get a local good auto electrician (once you have understood all the guys good advice given to you here) and get him to wire up your van properly. in the long run it will save you a lot of heart ache.

I Thank everyone for their help and contribution, hope you all have a Happy Christmas

I Thank everyone for their help and contribution. I have decided to have another solar panel fitted after christmas and sort it out the fuses once and all.

Strange thing : I have put another 10A fuse in (different type, third This week). I have been out and about twice , still not blown. keeping fingers crossed.

Delicagirl i have posted more pictures of my van on my profile page.

You may have been fitting 10A quick blow fuses these will blow at 10A. Normal fuses have a built in overload factor. A good idea would be to check with an ammeter the actual load carried then you confuse accordingly.

Merry Christmas to you as well.

Alf
