Have been inside a b17, very cramped with a thin walkway up the middle past the bomb racks and side gunner ports.
Taill gunner has to crawl down a tiny tunnel to get seated, belly gun ball has a very tiny door to get in on the top, talking to the staff
i was told that you had to be thin and no more than about 5 ft 6 and flexable to get in, bomb racks a tiny and hold not a lot, not one bit like the movies.

Yes it is a Dakota Russian Li variant. The wife’s dad used to fly in Dakotas delivering supplies to the Chindits in Burma. He said it was a nightmare looking out for Jap fighters when in a unarmed plane.

There are many wrecks found in the jungle to this day, some still with crew at crash sites.

in 1941 my dad was given a army plane ticket to fly from Cairo towards the front line in a Wellington bomber. The ticket had a seat number but in the plane there was just a circle with a number in it painted on floor. So put kitbag on it and sit, not much good when hitting an air pocket and they slid all over the place. It was 1990 before he went in a plane again after the war. It was a bit to fancy with seats in it.

On 12 October I am going to Shoreham for a simulated Lancaster bomber flying experience. Allegedly according to the publicity following the route of the Dam Busters. However if the simulator can do England to the Rhur in one hour, ( the duration of the 'experience') it seems to me that I won't be coming back.
I need to look up an on line Lancaster simulator and get to grips with the controls, specially the bomb aiming (I'll have to take my catapault) before I go to Shoreham. Hope I don't crash.

Shuttleworth accomodate motorhomes at their airshows. The shows are not cheap but certainly worth seeing especially if it’s calm and they get to fly the Edwardian aircraft.

Your fourth image reminds me of the SOE. They had a grass strip near Shuttleworth that flew agents behind enemy lines. Hitler wanted it bombed, but could never find it. A small farm shed then contained the parachutes put on before flying out, and that unimportant looking building is still retained as a memorial.

Laysanders were used for pilot gunnery practise at newtownards airfield during ww2.

Shuttleworth is only a stone's throw from me Bill but I have only ever visited once and that was last year with uncle Tim @zzr1400tim and another mate. Fascinating place to visit and I can't believe I have never bothered before.

Me and Tim must really visit there again and take the vans and stay overnight - even if it is only just down the road, you could be anywhere once you're onsite.
