Rang Michelin today on 08453661535 and spoke to a very nice lady, Vicky, re tyre pressures.
My tyres are 215/75/16 XC, and axle loadings with recommended tyre prssures are as follows:-
rear axle 2220 kgs 80 psi (at 2100 kgs still 80 psi)
front axle 1780 kgs 55 psi (1700 kgs 53 psi)

The rear at 2220 kg and front at 1780 kg are fully loaded as weighed at a builders yard (ticket supplied to be used as evidence in case of being stopped) just prior to going to Spain for the winter. The weights in brackets are more representative of say a w/e away.

In my Hymer handbook the recommended pressure is 80 psi for all the tyres, but as seen above, Michelin correct (contradict ?) this for the front tyres.

I'm going to take a few psi out of the fronts to see how we get on, but will I notice ?

regards

Allen

My last van (Elddis Autoquest 120) came out of brownhills with 80 psi all round and was a death trap. Phoned Michelin with axle weights (both 1600 kg) and got a figure of 52 psi.

I adjusted them to 55 front and 60 rear as motorhomes are stationary for long periods and I felt the sidewalls would be better off with the extra support. The ride was much better, my fillings stopped dropping out. :drive:

tyre pressures

i was reading a report from michelin a few years ago.

it was saying that it wasn't the tyres that took the weight of the vehicle but the air preasure inside the tyre that did.

the tyres just keep the air inside.

so like ***** i would travell with a higher pressure if travelling fully laden :hammer:

From my visits to the weighbridge I know that I'm almost fully loaded on the rear axle (2220 kg actual, 2300 allowable), so I'll run the michelins at 80 psi, but the fronts are only 1780 kg, that's almost half a ton less. The nice lady at Michelin said for that lesser weight they recommend 55 psi.
So, even though I'm fully loaded at 4000 kg, I've got a lot more on the back than I have at the front. Seems to make sense to run slightly lower pressures on the front tyres.
I'll give it a try.

Without getting my paperwork out to check that sounds similar to advice I was given last year by Michelin, we were unsure but gave it a try and it works. Its like driving a car, there is no pulling or drifting at speeds on the motorway.
I am driving a Hymer 544
