Following a recent thread about cleaning the waste water tank I have been out for a grovel under our van & have to report that there are absolutely NO water traps on any of the waste outlets from the sinks or the shower. That means that any smells from waste water in the grey tank will simply percolate freely up the waste outlets & stink the van out.

Your choices seem to be keep the tank empty & clean or leave the plugs in! You learn something every day doncha?

like i said dont worry they empty out as you go up /down hills .
going up hills is also good for blowing up your toilet .specially santander up to burgos after a night on the ferry .
anyone had it happen to them .?

A lot of vans have tiny waste pipes (and they are sometimes badly fitted in the factory).

If at all possible, change them to domestic.

There is also a new trend in coachbuilt motorhomes. The drain is sometimes only a few inches above ground level. I was parked next to one bloke who could not even get one of those Caravan thingummyjigs under his. :(

Can always fit some cak tanks/ leisure lines do them for 3/4" or 1" pipe or the rigid pipework as sometimes used ,WASTE SMELL TRAP 20mm 3 4 hose
mine is mostly household plumbing so I have normal traps on all my waste pipes
i used household bottle traps but still find them empty after going up mountains etc. dont have a smell prob though .
i,m certain too frequent emptying is the problem there .

I had a nasty smell every time I went out in the MH finally tracked it down to the shower tray plug hole (I keep the plugs in now)

I clean out the waste tank quite often by putting some washing powder down the sink plug hole and running a gallon of water into the waste tank, I then drive round for a few miles doing a few turns and then empty the content sensible... Keeps the waste tank smelling fresh :D

That's what I suspect was happening to me, the shower tray outlet is only a few feet from the tank. I like the kak tank idea I shall keep an eye open for them.

Now question for anyone who has fitted a waste water trap - how does it cope with winter frosts? It would be a pain in the butt to try & drain them all.

you will have to empty them . plus you have to be carefull they soon fill up with crap. we used to use the cak tank one in vw,s but it was always filling up. might have been the customers fault i agree. in winter i have known metal taps split with the frost in caravans /campers . thats in cornwall if your up north you must drain down.

Spend the winter somewhere warm in the van so they don't get the chance to freeze :)

gets cold up the atlas mountains though .
mind spain is worse . only a few miles inland and deep snow everywhere.
i like warmth. keep thinking one year i might drain my water heater . i might forget how to do it . ha ha .

not got waste tank on our van dont see any point carrying lt's of dirty water around with me . if i'm parked somewhere abit sensetive stick a buket under drain . :rulez: i imagine thats against the rules .:cool:

Mine is fitted with a trap because I thought that it had frozen when away this Easter but I later found it was blocked, I had taken the cover off last year and removed some muck but it has a narrow gap that had to be cleared with a small screwdriver, just taking off the cap and cleaning it was not sufficient to keep it flowing.

I hope not, I removed the flexi external drain pipe completely so that I can get my bucket underneath.
