Advance apologies if overdone thread!!BUT I am now desperate to get a tow car and am looking for recomendations re type of car, and most suitable A frame, also can A frame be used with a Rear box tia any/all replies appreciated

I couldn't give a recommendation for an A frame because I made my own and have no experience of using any other, the best car would depend on your own preferred options, how much you want to spend and how much weight your van can tow, I wanted a 4 door hatchback so I bought a Fiat Panda, it was a great choice for me but all of the small cars with manual transmission are suitable.
I have a back box and it does not interfere with the A frame although it is more awkward to latch on to the towball, I usually hit my head

Have a look for a car already converted complete with A frame, there are a few for sale, some of the A frame suppliers have a selection of cars for sale

i have a smart car and a frame for sale it is one of the first lh drive type convertable compo

I bought a Smart to tow and haven't found a use for it yet , Towed it to Watford and back and it tows just fine, unless you do a rapid left right from start and it throw a wobble til you stop and go again gently.

And that they need to be type approved as do tow hitchs
Do you mean A frames have to be type approved?, they do not need to be type approved unlike towbars on light commercial vehicles after 2012

Make of that what you will, on the one hand it says they fall outside type approval, on the other it says a car with a frame becomes a trailer, and trailers require type approval. That's one reason why in mainland Europe they aren't allowed, but in the UK we turn a blind eye.

I used Armitage Trailer & Towbars http://www.armitagetrailers.com/Aframes.htm

They are in Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, close to the M62 / A1(M) junction, you haven`t said where on the planet you are so they might not be applicable.

Had it for nearly 4 years and it worked well, no problems. The tow car i used was a Chevrolet Matiz.

Just remember a car being on tow will require the braking sys to work by law, this requires a hydrolic ram between seat frame and pedal, the lines must then be connected to a master cyl behind the sliding tow hitch.
These kits are are available to buy.
Also if fitting a lighting tail board it must have a fog light, many dont and are not legal .

We tow a Hyundai i20 with a 2.3 150bhp ducato with no problems. The car is quite heavy as well.

Trailers of the size and weight that we are talking about still don't need type approval, the Spanish don't like us towing because it is illegal to tow a vehicle in Spain even if it is broken down

AFAIK all O1 and O2 trailers built since 2012(?) need either type approval or IVA.

Home made ones are exempt as they dont have a clue when they were made,i have built many which er where old ones.

I think we should just agree to disagree Colin, you are right about O1 and O2 trailers needing type approval from a certain date but that is from manufactures, the A frame itself does not need type approval, it only becomes classed as a trailer when it is connected to a car, we need a court case;)
