Thanks Andy. We are looking at driving to bath on a Sunday morning spending the day there then heading off to longleat on the Monday. I'll check your link out later as I'm currently in work. As long as it's quiet and out of the way then it could be on the cards. Cheers

Cley Hill car park is a good secluded spot ( just a few mins drive from where I live warminster ) It does have a bit of a reputation for car thefts during the day from dog walkers but would have thought a camper in the night would be ok.

There is also Westbury White Horse, no overnight parking restictions but can have some boy racers in the evening & I am told it has been used as bit of a dogging site ? ( where hasn't these days it seems ? )

If all else fails then there is the Warminster services , I am not aware that they charge to overnight but you should check this out first to be sure. or there is a small idustrial estate , infact that's where Webs Motor homes have a base.

As for Mere you should be ok, if you take the B3095 from Mere to Warminster you may find a place you feel happy with along the top , there is a long straight section that overlooks the hills ( looks realy scenic ) but after that it goes through a few small villages ( deverills )

I would love to show you these places on a map but i'm afraid I have no idea to do it sorry

If you need any more info just ask

Have a great trip down this way

Cheers

77W - yup still has a bit of a reputation for dogging at the top of the White Horse unfortunately, but if you stay out of the way of the main car park areas you'd be ok I'm sure.

Mum still lives in Westbury, and Dad over near Trowbridge - still get down that way quite a bit (this weekend in fact), and love all the hills in the area - I fly planes off of most of them when I'm down :)

Thanks 77w. Very helpful indeed.

No worries !!!!

ANDY75 I used to spend my life up the horse at Westbury flying my paraglider & riding my kite buggy but took up kitesurfing so go down the coast most of the time these days. I even flew clay hill a few times but I was young & desparate then lol

have a nice trip this way at the weekend :)

Do you just want to be near Longleat? If so, here is a spot I park up when I go flying. It's NT land, no signs about overnighting, and is a stone's throw from Longleat :

Hi - thanks for this tip - I am heading down that way in a couple of weeks, staying at Longleat on the Friday night but going to get as close as poss on the Thurs night driving through night. The map does not seem to open up very well for me - is it Cley Hill roundabout ?

AJ

I think it is in between picket post roundabout and Cley hill. Looks as though it's in a lay by covered with woodland. Looks a good spot actually.

Ah yeah - looks like a little car park of sorts set off the road - looks a good spot and going to travel at night so wont take me too long to get there,

Massive thanks for posting the info

No probs. Yes its the car park which is access for Cley Hill itself. You may get early dog walkers there, but I've had no problems being parked up there till late, tho have never stayed over.

Just a word of warning about exiting - as you come out of the car park, the road to the right is reasonably fast, and quite a blind corner & hill. I usually make sure the window is down and the stereo is off so I can listen for oncoming cars too.

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for that - hahah so best turn off 'Take that' while I am leaving !!!

If you travel from Longbridge deverell on the A350 towards Shaftsbury then pick up the A303 towards Mere you can park up in the layby about 1 mile away from the junction on the left, its big but busy. You can also pull off the road on the righthand side BEFORE you drop down the hill towards Mere. It is not a layby but will do the job, The only problem is that this is a busy road and can be noisy (take a Party7 as a sleeping tablet). If you cut through the Deverells I think there is a pull in just as you drop down into Mere. This will be on the left next to trees .

Hi ,White horse hill Westbury definity has Boy Racers I have encountered them ,I moved when they started throwing up gravel against the van with power slides . This sort don't usually stop out late as they have to get home to have their nappies changed !.

On the A350 between trowbridge and westbury at the junction near Heywood is a also a layby just before the old cement works on the right handside heading to westbury . Failing that you can use White horse business park in Trowbridge about 1/4 from Yarnbrook heading towards Trowbridge.

Not overnighted there, but...

We stopped for a coffee on Sunday at a large layby on the A36 coming out of Warminster and quickly realised we'd picked what appeared to be a gay dogging spot! All the other vehicles had one man in them, most of them talking into mobile phones and one walked past and looked in, but disappeared when he saw my wife. The layby was on the left heading for the Bath and Trowbridge turns.

That layby was shut for a long time, maybe a year or so ? eventually the council or who ever had a huge cut back of all the trees , I guess to open the area up & make it less of a spot for all the goings on there, looks like the plan didn't work.

Was this during the day time ? if so it's a bit much eh !!

Did anyone try the Cley Hill spot at all? I'm down this weekend (not in the MH) but should hopefully be flying from Cley hill, so just wondering if anyone got on well with it.

Not yet. We were looking at staying there in a fortnight but going by some of the reviews here it doesn't seem like a very good option.I think i would feel safer wilding in the center of bath.

Geo camper , dont be put off, I think the car park would be ok to stay overnight , it's just dog walkers have had some breakins to ther cars during the day. not sure when the last one was though , could have been last week could have been many months ago, or even longer ?

Funny enough I just thought of another place too, ( probably a 10 min drive from Cley Hill ) At the bottom of Westbury White Horse there is a small car park that looks upto the horse, I pulled in there just before 8 am today & there was a camper that had been there over night ( external screens gave that impresion anyway ) so at least that's another option you have.
