Mercedes Hymer wanted

re:

Hi Compo

You have the same year S700 as myself. From the picture I guess yours has the rear lounge as opposed to the fixed bed.

What is the cover for that is covered when the habitation door is open?

Hi John,
The cover is for ventilation for one of the heating systems - I guess coming from Finland it needed lots of heating! I think it has 3 heating systems - Mikuni and Trumatic for 2.

It has a fixed bed at the back with access to the garage.
Also has a few nice extras fitted:
The cassette toilet has been replaced with a waste water tank and flushing loo (which i'm told is a very good thing)
2 solar panels
fitted generator
2 diesel tanks

I have brought a cover for it as the rooflight is leaking and needs replacing.
Can't wait for our first trip!
Cheers
Peter

You're more than welcome Compo :D
You've got my Email addy in case you need it, remember you don't need UK headlights for MOT, just the blanker or diverter type..
Fog lamp has to be on OSR or both rear lights..
Other than that, she should fly through...
CM autos in Preston took over a lot of TB Turbos work, he's the EX Head Mechanic..
He may be able to Turbo her :D

Hi Prof,
I see what you mean about the turbo - even the slight slopes of the Benelux caused problems. We are hoping to head for Spain, Portugal and France in the Summer
Thanks Again

Mine also has the fixed rear bed. It has a Truma S-3000 convection heater with blown air under the wardrobe next to the bed. (Some of the earlier ones had the fire set into the toilet wall on the other side.) This fire is roof flued.

It has another a Truma e-4000 (was originally an e-2800) inder the bar table next to the door. The flue is under the window on the side but well away from the open door. This fire is blown air and will not work unless it is blowing.

The waste tank toilets are good, but need pumping out. Finding a point to empty them is not easy as most sites are set up for caravan casette or porta potty disposal with no vehicle access or hidden behind flower beds. Even some Aires are not geared for easy tank disposal. Mine has the Thetford 200 bench toilet with casette removal door beside the door. This draws water from the main tank to flush.

We have a Gasparini Energy 20 LPG Generator fitted under the the van and a Bulk LPG tank just behind the wheel on the drivers side and below the fresh water tank which is under the bench seat.

By fitting the gas tank I was able to use the gas locker for two 110ah leisure batteries and a 1600w inverter. I also store all of my cables in there as well.

We have the larger single diesel tank (120 litres instead of 70 litres).

When we return to the UK in May we are planning to fit solar pannels.

Is the Mikuni heater the one fitted by the door?

Ours in normally the aspirated diesel engine and is very slow on hills when fully loaded but keeps on plodding, but once wound up it goes like a bomb. It climbed up the Pyrenees on the road from Irun to Zaragosa in Spain slowly but OK. We returned 19.8mpg on the run from the UK through France and Spain to Cartegena.

hi proff, i tried to track you down on motorhome facts .com and just seen you here. Well anyway i went ahead and bought a s660 1990 which had been turboed by T B turbos, (seller forgot to mention this, so very nice surprise!) We've done a couple of small trips, and love it, apart from being a slug! Which brings me to, i have done hours of reserch into this and now have details of exchange gearboxes, adds 12 mph on top end but does not effect first 4 gears, so you dont loose crawler gear etc, and wheel upgrade. the original question i was chasing you for was by the look of you pics of the hymer, it has 16 inch wheels? Are they merc 609 wheels with 206 75 16 tyres? I am planing on doing that upgrade, but have yet to hear it from any horses mouths weather its all fits and how successfull it is?

Also i dont have a roof rack and ladder like yours, but have sourced a set and i want to fit a roof box like yours as big as i can fit for all the kids beech toys etc, is yours a fiamma 30inch x 40 inch x 16 inch high box? That seems to be about as big a box as will fit around the various roof lights, i could get a larger one, but would have to mount it over the rear loung vent, and then i thought how would i actually get in to it! Does your set up work ok? oh and would you buy the original roof ladder and rails again or go for another make? Sorry for all the questions, but all this kit is quite expensive and you cant see \ touch it before its bought, so i'm trying to work out before its bought if its a good plan or not!

Well you look like you does some miles in yours, some great pics of how far you can go!

Thanks John
