Tescos have an 18 year old malt for £60.00  and I'm sure there are many way more expensive.

Has anyone ever tasted an 18 or 25 year old malt and thought, "this does not live up the billing". I know storage costs add up, but does time always mean an improvement to the taste?

Time means that it's not good enough after the normal 6 or so years so they need to mature,i.e. store, it longer in expensive barrels in an expensive bonded warehouse during which time the 'angels' get their share.

That is why 18yr costs so much, not because it's better.

What I would like to know is is Lidl or Aldi cheaper abroad?
Perhaps Belgian knows about Belgian prices from Hoboken (waar de boeren ......... koken !!)
I ll find out over here in france.

Bottoms up!

Kris

Much prefer Bushmills Black bush if you ask me, I know Ajs will have something to say about this but its more peaty if you ask me, It also costs more for the black bush, Spose this 18 yr stuff will come in handy for lighting the BarBecue.:D:D

Jeezes Kris,
Where in heaven's name did you find out that in Hoboken 'de boeren stront koken' (translation: where the farmers boil sh*t) ???:D.
(the nickname is right you know: in the old times they used to collect the menure in Antwerp to fertilize their fields....;))
Prices of whisky in Aldi and Lidl: around 10€; i'll have a look (and a booze ) :p
Meanwhile I have to empty this bottle to buy a new one tomorrow :D
I noticed for Lidl that prices in France are almost the same as in Belgium.
(My bottom is up)

Once, I saw a 100 year old malt scotch on sale priced at £7200. I lady standing by me said "look at that £72 for a bottle of whiskey."

sampled these 2....lidle's finest

the 18 year old something or other...well... it isn't a single or even a double malt..
and i don’t think that even if they kept it in the barrel for another 25 years it would make much difference...
it aint good... and for 20 squid i can think of some blends that are much nicer.
i suspect that they have used new barrels to break em in for this sort of 3rd party branded wiksey

... i suspect it has come from the glenlivert area
as hidden away in the flavour release there is a hint of glenlivert.
but it's very harsh by comparison

on the AJS rating scale ... i'll geeit fyve

which means i wouldn't waist my money on it .. and if offered it to drink I’d have it with a splash of watter

as fer the Speyside...again yes i can tell it's a Speyside single malt
... but
for some reason, again it's too harsh by comparison with branded whiskey houses from that area.
drinkable none the less and more subtle than the other 1.

so i'll geeit 6
which means i'll drink it neet if strainplate, trickydicky, peepee or stigbloke is buying it

regards
aj

btw.. that mushpills from Ireland is fine fer gettin paint of windowsills.. honest

TO AJS (the grand master of whhiiiissskkeeeS)

oh grand master i respect thee even more, Just come in from a night out and resamples this 18 yr old shiote. Now I have been drinking Bushmills 10 yr old malt while out in the pubsh and it was pure nectar compared to this Shiote from PIDDLES. I got a nearly full bottle to give away when we meet up next. Not Bushmills thats all for memememe.

Regarsd Big boack.

Ps, This damn horse is PISHING me off now how do i shoot it.

Without being too pedantic;) I hope AJS, if it's whiskey, it's not Scotch. You should know better!

Serves him right for pretending to be a conny sour!:p

Hi Leo

Brief story of my live:
Born south of Antwerp, moved to England at the age of 38, and, I am now living in rural France since 2006. A textbook European, but still a proud Fleming !

Greetings,

Kris

whiskey with water or coke is sacrilage full stop end of debate in my opinion

Sacrilege !!,,,,putting water in malt whiskey,,,or any whiskey..;):(

Yep, I'm with Nomad on this........whisky's got to be drunk neat

I had some cheap Lidl malt whisky and blind tested it against some 12 year old Glenfiddick with my mates and ...........

most prefered the Lidl!

i have just been up to Skye and the highlands to wake my van up as it doesnt get used much.... 940 miles in four days and it never missed a beat despite being 16 years old . i stocked up with a few malts while i was up there but not at the distilleries , they always charge a premium . I spent £250 in pitlochry at Robertsons on the main street ......best value around , apart from my over night stopover which was on the car park and cost nowt . its free from 6pm on a saturday till the monday morning and has designated caravan spaces :D
