Magic Earth sat nav app (Android and iOS)

True, just handier, I sue them for uploading Netflix if I run out of stuff to watch on longer trips, Cafes are normally better or pubs,

Copilot was free I am sure they will charge. I have a lifetime with copilot had to fight for my rights but it doesn’t update anymore sneaky barstewards ;)
I bought a lifetime Copilot (in the days when you always bought everlasting licences). After a few years deleted. I installed it again and had no trouble logging in. However, live traffic is an extra that I don't have. So I deleted it again.

An update, quite literally...

Magic Earth routed me onto a toll road in Portugal yesterday, namely the A25 at Aveiro. This concerned me so I checked the OSM mapping later and found that the A25 was now noted as having no tolls.

It occurred to me that this might be an error so I posted about this on the OSM Community forum. Very quickly I was advised that the toll status had been changed recently, and another contributor cited an item on the web about the Portuguese government removing tolls from some roads with effect 1 January.

Unfortunately the government has not updated or removed the signs.

This shows how quickly map changes can be effected and the relatively short timescale for these changes to be applied to the app.

As an aside, I've installed Organic Maps for a try out and first impressions are good in as much as it is Maps.me resurrected, so I am familiar with it.

Took a while to download the complete coverage for Uk, France and Spain but the thing is entirely offline when in use so goes easy on the data.

See how it goes but no app has all the answers I suppose.

Cheers

Yes Organic maps is great. Not tested is capability re navigation in cities. But ok outside cities. It's simple ability to save locations in sutablly labelled groups is good

Cannot get it to download without going through google which i refuse to do on my mobile.

I used to be a advocate of maps.me til it went all cyclist, then moved to organic maps and I keep all my POIS on there so no need to have a signal to get on to WC etc.

I just used the App Store Kev because I use iPhone. Whenever I go on the internet I use Duck Duck Go on Safari.

Works for me.

Do it in Incognito mode then Trev. I've been using Google on my phone for decades. Never had an issue.
No google spyware used here, falcon brave or vivaldy, think the web site may no longer be active as no email returns and a blank ph no, web side dates from covid times, i have beem trying it for over 6 mths with no joy.

My linux mate put me onto a better gps sys called osmandroid, miles better than magic earth, no data required and works on any 4g android 7 onwards.

I’ve been experimenting with magic earth via Android Auto in the car.
It’s frozen or crashed a few times which may be more to do with android auto than the app but it has one really annoying thing I don’t like. When It audibly notifies about a problem accident etc on the route a red marker thingy with distance appears below the direction info top left but you don’t seem to be able to easily interact with it e.g by tapping the red bit to find our what or where.

Trying to zoom in and out whilst driving is far too dangerous

Also swmbo hates it because it says advanced driver mode activated when I am the one driving !…….

I find magic earth does not have many of ther roads on the map and only shows a arrow on a blank white screen, osm android has them all.
Anyway i bought a 7 inch GPS on ebay for £25 new and works a treat, now fixed in the van. :)

I don't use Android Auto. I just have ME running on a large Android tablet mounted on the dash.

The traffic information tells you the length in time of the delay, how far away it is and if it's slow traffic the distance over which the delay is occurring.

I've never tried interacting with the information, I just absorb it and continue. I never interact with any device when driving and if the phone rings it's ignored...
