Hello,

I wonder if any members have recommendations, or otherwise, for 12v chargers for a Macbook Pro with retina display (magsafe 2 connector).

I was all set to order the Lavolta one from Amazon but reading the reviews, half of which are negative, it seems dangerous more than unreliable!

I'm wondering now if an inverter might be the better option, but it does seem overkill.

I'd appreciate any views or experiences.

Regards

My charger looks exactly like that except it's not labelled 'Lavolta'. It was made in China and is probably the same as that but without the same label.

It has served me well on two European trips and charged my MacBook with no problem.

More recently I've only been taking my Nexus 7 tablet which does emails, Wildcamping & Facebook perfectly well.

Prior to the MacBook I had a MacBook Pro which I took away with me to Europe. I had a mains charger which I plugged into an inverter and whoosh - goodbye motherboard. I've no idea if it was the inverter or if the MacBook Pro had just reached its allotted span but that was an expensive incident.

That's the sum of my experience for what it's worth.

Just looking at the reviews on Amazon, the bad ones are a bit odd. One of them refers to having to switch the electricity off in the house (it's a 12v adapter !!!!!!) and another says to buy the Apple one - which doesn't exist, otherwise I'd have bought it myself rather than from a 3rd party vendor. Possibly they're taking about a mains one and not the 12v one.

The ones which give it a higher rating seem to have used it as intended.

Judge for yourself…..

Can't advise on that sorry. Had Sony laptop and charged on 12v into the cigarette thingy on the dashboard. But having invested (wisely I hope) in Mac Book Pro I use the supplied charger and plug into a normal socket using the inverter. No problems so far -since May (where's the fingers crossed smiley)

I use one from Protronica. It's expensive but works well.

This looks okay, thank you.

I was hoping for recommendations based on experience as, prompted by the Lavolta feedback on Amazon, I am a touch paranoid given the high cost of Macbooks. I wish Apple did one of their own then one would at least feel a bit more confident.

Thank you.

Yes, I see what you mean. I'm just a bit paranoid given the high cost of the Macbook.

Thanks

Thank you for the recommendation, which is what I was hoping for.

I didn't think the price was bad at £39.95 then I see that the magsafe cable adds another £24.95 to it.

I'm still willing to pay the £64.90 if that is the price of peace of mind. It's a lot less than a replacement laptop.

I wonder do you use the magsafe 2 option as well.

Thanks

Phill

I'm still using a MacBook Pro with the original magsafe connection. The 12v charger and lead was included when I bought one of the external batteries. The 12v kit is excellent - it makes no noise and is still working after years of use. When I eventually change to a device with the new connection I intend to opt for the adaptor. Otherwise we recharge the macs with a Kensington Ultra Portable Power Inverter. These are discontinued but I think they can still be found online.
