Does anyone have any comments about the Lunar motorhomes. I know nothing about them ( or any really ). The one I have seen is in a fiat Ducati, and is 2.3 td.

Can you imagine a Fiat RV with desmodromic valve gear? Fantastic! It might just keep up with our Sprinter......

The belt is a doddle. Adjusting the closer shims is where the fun starts. ZERO play......

Back on topic boys!

We have a Lunar Premier & have had him for 6 months. He is an 06 plate based on a Renault Master.
There's lots of things we like about him. The bathroom layout is excellent, as the shower really is separate with a good door and the loo area stays dry. Fixed bed has lots of storage underneath. Fridge is very large with separate freezer.
The oven is lethal. It is mounted too high & I don't like using it. There is no grill.
Mileage about 30mpg if Phill is driving, less if I am (he says!).
We did have a serious water ingress problem in the roof. The dealer said it was caused by the fridge chimney vent being fitted in an unconventional manner at the time of manufacture. I wouldn't place too much trust in their opinion though as it took them multiple attempts to even investigate the leak properly.

David, I did say I have no idea about them, lol.
I think it is a 2004 Lunar Newstar 58e. A 2.3 it'd Fiat Ducato. 35000 miles.

We've got a 2008 Lunar Premier on a Renault Master and can't fault it as a Motorhome for 2 People. It's well built although a lot of folk on here call coachbuilts "flimsys". The only issue is that Lunar no longer build Motorhomes and the ones they marketed were built in Belgium by a firm who went bust. Consequently you get no help at all from Lunar now if you have a problem or need advice and I'm speaking from experience. Having said that we're more than happy with ours.

Leaky Lunars ?

Where have I heard That Phrase before ?

We had the 06 Homecar PR52 that Lunar imported from Belgium... ( German, Chinese and Italian bits, assembled by Ex-Jugoslav labour.

We bought it on the strength of it's huge bathroom, massive fridge freezer, great kitchen and light roomy interior.... all under 6 metres ... It looked like an ideal long terming wild camper and the tiptronic auto box made it Ok for the O.L. to drive, (bless her) They became the Lunar Premier range when Homecar's Italian owner went t!ts up

Build Quality turned out to be abysmal and we virtually lived on Campells Preston frontage until the stressed out service foreman had virtually given up on us ... We parked the van across the main entrance and threatened to take the keys and book into a hotel in Blackpool if they refused to help us. They had problems getting bits from Belgium, making it sound as if Belgium was somewhere to the north of Tibet ! Then we heard of Homecar going bust.

I contacted Lunar and got a lovely sympathetic customer support manager who pulled out as many stops as she could before we set out to over winter in Portugal . At regular intervals, Fed -EX vans would bounce up our lane here, bringing replacement bits ,(often to replace wrong parts that had been sent... We still have a selection of bathroom taps and table tops if anyone is interested !

We limped home the following spring, with a list of problems and this lovely lady booked us into a firm run by an Ex-Lunar manager, gave him the run of their stores and authorised unlimited skilled fitter time until we were satisfied .

That gave us an almost custom built interior , but we were never able to live with the overhead oven ...anything more than a quick pizza and the ceiling would be turning brown!

Just as the 3 year warranty finished the Servo pump unit failed, Renault replaced it at cost price, (they said), and suggested I sue the dealers . Campbells ignored us right up to the steps of the Small Claims Court before agreeing a settlement.

Just after it's 5th birthday, we gleefully traded it in ...... for a new Bentley !!

But that's another story !

Leaky Lunars ?

Perhaps not ours even with its exclusive features .. It had an adventure on the recovery truck bringing it back to the UK,following the servo failure in Spain. We watched, and luckily, took photos as the Idiot driver loaded it onto the high front platform , in spite of our stated concerns .... And drove it into some overhanging trees before ripping out the overhead power cables for the whole campsite. It had done 48,000 interesting miles as well when we said goodbye to it !

Ours was an early prototype and we hope that they learned from our experiences. In later years, Lunar built them in the UK and stopped fitting the overhead oven.

I would suggest a prospective buyer should ask to see the V5 log book and contact the previous owner ... Should we ever have to consider a used van, we would certainly ask .

I think I will pass on the Lunar motorhome I was thinking to look at. It hasn't got an awning, which I would like, and it is already slightly above our budget. I would preferre a second hand motorhome whose company is still around. Thanks to everyone for your input.

Love our Homecar Which we bought second hand 3 yrs old with 6000 miles on it . It's based on the Renault Master and has the 6 speed auto box and is lovely to drive. Thing is I think that because motor homes are built in such small numbers ( compared to cars ) and are such complex machines existing in such a harsh environment with huge amounts of vibration and stresses, extreme changes in temperature and moisture conditions it is almost inevitable that most will have some teething problems .

I had the following problems
1 the calira charger was not working so on our first trip out our cabin battery went flat although we were on a hook up . It turned out to be a known problem and I sent the charger to Davan caravans who changed a circuit board for an updated one with a cooling fan. £150.00
2 the non return valve in the domestic water pump had failed and caused the hot water to splutter badly. I fitted a non return valve in line which cured this £10
3 the fridge stopped working on 240v .I fitted a new element £30.00
4 had a freeze up in the shower valve. Bought a new valve OFF THE SHELF from local caravan dealer Big plus. £65.00
5 Exhaust gas return valve failed . Direct line breakdown cover (green flag) recovered us to nearby garage. Emergency weekend repair £400
6 Overcab window leaking . Removed and resealed £9.00

So there it is , not upset by any of this par for the course I think

Great motorhome , best thing we ever bought

I think if you ask about Mh there will be somebody who has had a bad experience with a particular make or model. I think the one we have most people wouldn't touch with a barge pole ( rollerteam 5 Now 13 years old ). But he's done us proud over the last 14 months. And has now done 85k miles But as with anything ....there will be problems. A Friday afternoon build is the same in any factory.i think you should get what you like after satisfying yourself that all is good. And not take too much notice of others peoples misfortune. Good luck with whatever you get....and be sure to Enjoy!!!

Regarding my earlier post

But seriously ... We have just spring cleaned the shed and are about to throw away a brand new bathroom pillar tap and one of the big square Dometic fridge vents . If they are of any use to Homecar/ Lunar owners , we could bring them back to the UK next month. Our Yorkshire upbringing is still very strong and we hate waste .

Just PM Me .
