low bridge

:eek: Had one of these embarrassing moments yesterday with a low bridge
We were visiting St.Andrews in fife, and I decided to turn down a narrow lane by the castle.
a sign said "Low Bridge 13ft 1ins" so thats OK, as my height is 9ft 5ins so I drove on through another bridge 13ft 1ins,
then down a narrow lane round a couple of corners to be confronted with another low bridge height 8ft :eek::confused:
now you'd think this was bad enough but I reckoned the road was about 18 ft wide
and the van is 20ft long :confused:
so turning was not an option
finally I decided I had to reverse all the way back,
with Angie walking up the road behind me waving all the cars to the side,
cos I said "once I start I ain't stopping" :eek:
eventually I found a place wide enough to turn
but left in my wake many frustrated car drivers
with their wheels on the pavement :eek::mad:
Ive often laughed at other people's experience with low bridges
to them, I apologize :rolleyes::rolleyes::D

Crossing the Swiss Alps between CHUR and ANDERMATT we came upon a low tunnel 2.9m height. Our MH is 3.1. Did not want to back track 40 odd Kms. Ann got out and we tried to inch our way through the tunnel. We made it by keeping to the middle of the road. I now wonder if all bridges and tunnels are exactly what they say or if it is a saftey precaution. Any comments from you folks.
