Lost power to brakes and steering

Whilst driving home last night I suddenly lost power to my brakes and steering. :scared:

No warning light, and van recently serviced.
It happened at high speed after 50 miles of motorway driving.
I have a 1993 Talbot 2.5 turbo diesel.

Can you tell me what causes this please?

I don't have a van mechanic since I was let down when it was serviced (in Mytchett, Surrey), and my car mechanic is on holiday.

I am due to go touring on Friday, but at least it happened now and not when on the pass to Applecross! :scared::scared:

Chris ,I dont think you can P.M. someone unless they are a FULL member, who actually subscribes to the site, which is only £15 for the year. If you click on my name for example ( left click) a box will drop down and you can see there how to P.M. me. hope this helps.

Hi Charlie

Brilliant, thanks!

I have written down your number so you can delete the post now. I'd hate if it fell into the wrong hands!

Chris

Update

Found drive belt had snapped !

Now comes the good bit the power steering was an after market add on so the normal 800mm belt was too long

Raided Halfords came away with a selection of belts

Sods law dictated we needed a 780mm belt but could only find 775mm or 787mm the adjustment was made very limited by the conversion

By removing the vacume pump we were able to fit the new belt with the standard 1/2 inch play

Chris can now set off on her travels on Friday as planned :drive:
