Loss of UMPH (power) going up hill

Hi guys
hoping someone out there can help. I have a 1.9TD (w reg) autoroller which trundles along quite happily most of the time but when faced with any kind of hill loses all its Umph! I have to resort to putting it in 1st to keep going... is this a common prob? any suggestions appreciated as I'm sure I'm going to burn something out pretty soon
many thanks
lisa

Try changing your Air and Fuel filters for a start.

Put some premium grade diesel in (the more expensive stuff) and put some Redex (for diesel engines) in with the fuel.

These are cheap options. If you do not see any change in a short time, you will have to think about the expensive options (like taking it to a good mechanic).

Our 1993 Autotrail has a 2.5 diesel engine and will roll along
quite easily at 65/70 but does labour a little on steeper hills but
we never have to go into 1st gear. Ours is a bit brick shaped so
not made for great speeds, cruising speed is just fine.

One of the mechanics will be along soon with some advice.

I am a former commercial diesel mechanic and your problem is common. you'll need a new diesel filter, replace airfilter and run some injecter cleaner in the tank. you can do this yourself or if not sure ask a male friend.

....or you could ask a female friend too :p;);););)

We used to have a 1900 td and found that you have to drive it i.e when your coming to a hill change down and full throttle and before the engine revs drop below 2000revs drop down again , and so on. It worked for me

We have a 2.8TDI unit in the 'van, but I have a 1.9TDI engine in my golf estate, but it also has one of those engine management plug in boxes which upgrades the bhp to 130.
There is a massive difference in 'pull' uphills and should give me better mpg if I could keep my 'heavy' foot off the throttle!!!...

I have seen this twice and both times it was a split in one of the air intake hoses.
Follow the routes from the inlet manifold back to the air filter, this is common on all the Peugeot diesels, just tape up any splits you find and you will see an instant result as this restores the boost pressure from the turbo just to prove it then repair it properly.
Its also worth checking the air filter inlet as I have seen plastic bags stuck in these.

I agree with winchman... it sounds like a lack of turbo boost to me, would look at ALL the inlet hoses and the little pressure sensing hose that controls the turbo unit.

Thanks everyone
Going to get a manual but feeling confident enough to have a bit of a tinker -(hubby shudders and shakes head in woe!)
Discovering all sorts of new skills since getting the MH - already fixed rattling heater and changed wiper blades -I know it's only a start and I'm sure there will be some major calamities but this is from someone who couldn't even put oil in (I know I should be ashamed!!)
Enjoying the site
