Libya

so someone carries a knife . so what. i have carried one since being a small boy. i was a cub scout . a scout .army cadet . army . qualified butcher slaughterman. still to this day carry a penknife . very often a quite large one . very usefull . does it make me a killer .
i could be, killed more things than many.
also been a wild biker for most of my life . used to fight just about every weekend . never pulled a knife . dont wear it or carry it if going into court but do carry it just about all the time.
lets not get carried away. i personally have never seen an arab pull a knife or threaten me with one. i do normally spend time somewhere in an arab county and have done since 76.
i have had mates done for knifing folk even a few for using shot guns on others . but they werent arabs .
can say i wouldnt have any problems killing if i had to. wouldnt have joined the army if it bothered me.

What points?

1. Why do you generalise from one (or at best a very small number) example?

2. Why do you try to make out that violence is part of the Arab culture (as opposed to western cultures) when if any westerner had experienced what they had experienced then there is every chance that he too would have a similar "attiude"?

Ah but usually they follow that up with "yes, but are you a Catholic Atheist or a Protestant Atheist?"

Last time someone said that to me was in Belfast in the 70's :D

... in the same way that all women, despite carrying the necessary equipment, are not hookers...:lol-053:

hi mastodon, talking of hookers .
i once in court gave a definition of a solicitor . i know some girls that solicit. they charge 60quid an hour if they like you ,you get an hour and 15 mins
visit a solicitor they charge 150quid an hour ,if you are lucky they see you for 55mins.
went down well as you can imagine.
also challenged the same one about being a traffic expert . we all know what an expert is .
x is an unknown factor a spurts a drip under pressure.
they love me in court.

Yes, but are your two cauliflowers together as big as the giant one I got yesterday from Heligan Farm shop for 70p?

And you did ask....................

A bargain indeed and as Confucius said: "當豬開始吹口哨时间叫聲調" and Jacques Cousteau said " Blub, Blub, Blub, Blub!!"

Well, I know "these people" very well too and I could produce lots of evidence to show you are generalising from a small example but let me put it this way - some would say there is a similar knife culture among certain sectors of our urban young but would it be fair if a Yemeni concluded that all Englishmen carry knives and would use them if you disrepected them? Of course not - no more is it true to say that the same applies to ALL Yemenis, most of whom carry the knife for ceremonial reasons (in a similar kind of way to the knives that Sikhs carry). Mind you, if you confront an angry man (whatever his ethnic origin) holding a knife I think that says more about you than him!

I note that since my reply, you have edited your post to include a video. I'm not sure why you have done this because the video makes two things clear - that the knives are indeed carried for ceremonial purposes and that the tradition is in danger of dying out. So your point is.....?
Just before I throw this thread into touch, my observations about "these people" are based on, not only my business partners, and friends, murder by two Yemini's with those "Purely Ornamental" Daggers, I also have a niece and grandson who are mixed race, they're half Saudi. My experience isn't based on a two week all inclusive holiday in i.e. Tunisia, or camping out near Marrakesh in the Winter, I'm much closer to "those peoples" culture.

Quote, by a member of the Saudi Royal Family: "Democracy is incompatible with the Islamic faith".

Just because this was said by a member of the Saudi Royal Family doesn't necessarily make it true you know! And I suspect that some of us may have worked out that a member of the Saudi Royal Family may not be too impartial when discussing whether or not his country adopts democracy.

In the recent elections in Tunisia, the first country to begin the 'Arab Spring', there was a 90% turnout, which is far higher that in any of the western democracies. This rather disproves the myth that citizens of countries that are Islamic do not want democracy!

Perhaps what he should have said was: "Democracy is not compatible with an absolute monarchy, which has an extremist version of Islam as its state religion?
