Cope without an oven on the road............

Do you fit one? .........if so is it easy?

left hooker how do you do

we have a skillet got it from motorhome show warms pies, pizzas , toasted sandwiches & lots of other things worth the money.

what would you cook in an oven ? I suppose if you want to cook things like a sunday roast lunch you need one , but as 90% of the world doesn't have one it is fairly easy to adapt to cooking without one

last year I was looking at motorhomes in the UK , and at one dealer I visited I commented that we gave up ovens 40 years ago ...we were looking at the number of motorhomes and were surprised to see them with ovens ; the salesman said that 95% of ovens fitted to motorhomes and caravans they took in part exchange had never been used , that most people who specified one in a new vehicle soon changed their mind about using them

We wouldn't be without our oven and its built-in grille. All the things that we cook at home such as casseroles and roasts can be done in our 'van's oven. And as for those 'clever' little things that you put on a gas ring, don't bother, they are totally useless and cannot make an evenly toasted piece of bread. I've tried both kinds, as I thought that they may be easier just to make a couple of slices of toast, but both went in the bin.

I work on the principle that it must be better to have something than not to have it. If you haven't got an oven, then you can't use one! But if you've got one then, even if you only use it occasionally, at least you can use it!

We also store casserole dishes etc. in our oven. We wrap them up to stop them rattling and the oven is then used as storage space, so at least we get some of the space back. If you're so stuck for space that a small oven compromises your life then you probably need to rethink your entire strategy regarding 'van size and what you carry.

The question that you should be asking is: "Do we have an oven at home and do we use it?" If the answer is 'Yes' then why should life in your motorhome be any different? I try to be as comfortable in my 'van as I am at home, which is why I have a shower and a TV and an oven and a fridge!

Oven in van

When we had smaller vans we had to manage without an oven.

Now we have room we wouldn't be without an oven.

We go away a lot so we want to eat as well as we do at home

The advantage is not having to watch over food while it is cooking.

We buy chickens or joints of ham, make casseroles, bake cakes as well as heat up bought food

Is it safe to come out yet:scared:

Whats an oven is that the thing nex to the washin mer thingamy jiggy.:D

we fitted an oven, because, we love fresh baked bread, even if it is part baked, (we found bread doesn't last very long in our van if its fresh, (however part baked can last a month or more,) we can eat home made food frozen in heat proof containers, then eat from containers less washing up, and of course eat anything else you could heat up in an oven, then you store all pans woks etc, etc within.

works for use:bow:

we both use our oven at home a lot,so we use the one in the van a lot. life without fresh cakes and a decent pie would just be pointless and dull.not to mention economy, have you seen the price of cakes in france?they're not that good, mine are better. casseroles, roast spuds, cauliflower cheese, lemon meringue pie ummm

Now you are making me feel hungry !!☺☺☺

I'm sure i've seen a folding metal box that sits on top of a stove to turn it into an oven. That's probably what i'd go for if i felt the need for an oven as there's no space for a proper one in my 'van. I'll post a link if i can find what i mean, but my google-fu is weak today.

You don't have to use an oven. But, it opens up so many options that we'd not want to be without it and it would be a major disadvantage when choosing a van if there was no oven. No problem for a week or so but if you used it just for this one thing it would be worth it. Your own bread.

I know exactly what you mean, we inherited one from my parents like that! I think it's lurking in the garage somewhere, forgotten all about it until you said. So there's one in Cornwall, - I think! BH may have chucked it out on one of his purges!

I have to admit to using my oven for storage mainly. If we are on hook-up, I use a Remoska, the microwave and an electric ring. If not, if I can't cook it on a ring or under the grill, I don't usually bother, as I worry that the oven will use loads of gas.

At home, I rarely use my oven. With only two of us, I prefer the remoska or the halogen oven.

Each to his or her own. Just because we differ, I don't see why we have to be condemned for it if it doesn't meet with someone else's approval. I thought the purpose of these forums was to SHARE our knowledge, not have a go at each other???

PS The oven is still there in the garage!! I think our resident meece have been dining on the box, but rest looks OK! It is a Coleman Oven 5010A700, and probably dates back to the 70's.

Ovens!

Come on Guys! Don't Squabble over an oven!! We all want different things from life, I like me oven! But I sure as hell would be just as happy without one! Love to you all!

And another thing.

A slow cooker, small one 1.5 litres and 150w is great for cooking your tea whilst on the road for a few hours, if you have an inverter. Done this a few times and it's a real treat to pull up and tuck in to a nice casserole or curry.

I understand Northener's points, but you asked about ways of doing without a fixed oven. These are my methods gained from experience, and I think they are probably a lot cheaper or even safer than retro fitting an oven.

Having said that, the boss says we will have an oven in the next van we get...

Cheers
