leaking skylight

would be very grateful for advice on leading skylight on campervan...............what would be the easiest way to stop the leak and what sealant would i need,,,,,,,,,,,,,thank you for any replies.......trixie
 
Morning Trixie,
There are two ways to try and cure it

1, you could try something called Captain Tolleys creeping crack cure....it has had good reviews...or

2, remove the skylight, clean off the old mastic and renew with something designed for the job. We used some that came on a roll. It wasn't too difficult.

As a temporary fix, get a bin liner and tape that over.
 
I had leaking skylight on our 2015 Apache from a corner on the frame, bought the non setting mastic to do the job, but when I removed the inner section found a couple of the screws were not tight at the leak area that pull the outer section and inner together so tightened them up and leak cured, been OK for about a year now.

thanks sue.........big tarpolin sheet over the whole roof for the past 6 weeks or so whilst it has been stood on drive........which i hope has kept the rain out....
....will try and get some capt. trolleys and see what that does.......
....dont exactly know just where in the skylight it is leaking from as i cant get into it because of the tarp sheet.......and that takes some getting on and off and securing etc.....mind. it will have to come off to use capt trolleys.....but need a good temp fix in the meantime
did think of putting a small piece of pond lining over skylight.......however.....bit hesitant.......ok whilst stood......when it comes to driving it.....dont want it coming loose and landing on someone elses windscreen going down motorway.........

would have to go to garage etc. to remove skylight and replace....probably will have to do that in the end tho.........however..just need a temp fix in the meantime to get a day out in it....or to take me home...........many thanks sue...good suggestions

thank you budgie very helpful.........could be the case with our camper......however daughter just knows its leaking....so put the big tarp over it......cos it was lashing down with rain at the time............will check when we get the tarp off...many thanks

Very much depends on where the leak is (opening part, frame...). That will determine the best means of effecting a temporary or permanent repair.
 
Depending on how old the van is, it might well be something to do with plastic embrittlement. We had a similar issue with our 2001 Autotrail where one of the plastic rivets holding the dome onto the opening mechanism had failed. It all looked good at first sight, but a much closer inspection revealed the issue. I temporarily sealed it up with some Gorilla tape and replaced the entire skylight a few weeks later.
