laptop sound gone can anyone help pleeeease?

This may well not work, but worth a try at least:
Go to Control Panel, then sound and audio devices and check that a device is selected, if not there may be a drop down menu with a device to apply.
In answer to you question 2, rebooting is simply restearting. (ps I am not an expert!)

Thank you, but there are no audio sound devices in the control panel. It just says 'no audio devices installed'.

I made a recovery disc when I bought the laptop, if the sound drived could be found on there could aomeone tell me how to load it please. Meanwhile I will switch off and try and read the bios when it starts up.

It it does not show audio device in device manager then its probably a hardware problem, not the driver (or sound disabled in BIOS)
The other thing is Vista being absolutely useless, sometimes it goes wrong and needs a complete restore, after backing up your data.
Could be F8 or F11 or other on start up, consult manual or the net for that. Should recover from hard drive without CDs
If its hardware, alternative is buy a USB sound card. Tiny, looks like a memory stick, think about £5 to £15
I can fix them remotely and would have a look FOC but doubt if I could do anything with it if it does not detect the hardware in the first place!

So it started up but I don't know what i am looking for. I pressed f11 for system information and it has taken me to recovery manager that will restore it to factory settings???? Does that mean I will lose everything on there?

You have probably just answered my question as I asked it. What I can't understand is that I have been able to get it back and then lose it on switch of and restart?

Purely an example, there is one for £2 at PC World but you would need to plug headset in to it (or external speakers). See what they can offer?

Try resetting the BIOS anyhow, usually F2 to get in there and look for restore defaults, maybe F9 or something. You cannot do any harm it it loads the default values.

Be careful with F11, early ones deleted your data, later ones and Windows 7 back it up but I would not risk it anyhow. Backup to an external USB drive first!

You should be backed up anyhow. It WILL go wrong one day just like us. It's just a matter of which day!

I am backed up to an external hard drive, but if the computer goes wrong...it's not much use anyway. I have backed up files photos etc literally saving to the ext hard drive, as I backed up once before using software, computer broke and the other one didn't have the right software on it!

I have checked the ,very small Manual, can't see how to get into the bios. On start up the creek shows the options too quickly for me to read them properly.

I have just tried system restore, to when it was working and that didn't work either. I scan not cope with the start up screen it flashes on and off too fast. Not sure about getting a device that requires headsets or speakers as we use the laptop to watch DVDs when out in the van. But anyway thanks to everyone for their advice, I'll have to be good and ask Father Christmas for a new laprtop maybe?
All the best
Sue

Before going for a new laptop you could try an upgrade to Windows 7 (8 is coming out shortly I believe so prices will drop again).

Also there is a software program called Driver Genius which scans for all needed drivers, finds them and installs them for you.

PS Windows 7 is only about £40 if you know a student or teacher.

Hadn't thought about upgrading - thanks. Did try driver genius but the audio disappeared overnight. Might try again now I have restored to before I started messing about with everything.

You can backup to the external drive with the vista built in backup but you can also just copy and paste (preferred) so you see whats there before doing it. Then disconnect the external drive before wiping it! Upgrading to 7 is not cost effective and it will not cure the problem if its hardware related. To get in to BIOS is usually F2 (older PC its Del). Try Pause/Break to see if it will pause the start up or look in the manual/on net. Don't panic, just take your time, copy and paste everything on to external drive. Then go for the F11 full restore. You will need to re-install any other applications and printers afterwards. If it does not work after that its hardware. Things can come and go with dry joints or bad connections but unlikely with a built in sound card.

Just gently tap F2 (about every 2 seconds) after pressing the on button. Then do same again with F1 and F10 till you find the right one but I'm sure its F2

You are really being incredibly helpful...I will turn off and restart and try your suggestion.
